# How to Reach a Startup Founder Directly (and What to Actually Say)

By [Dhrumil Barot](https://www.jobfinder-ai.com/about#founder), Founder. Published 2026-05-14. Updated 2026-06-08. 3 min read.

At small companies the founder is the hiring manager. Here's how to find them, reach them, and write a message that earns a reply instead of a delete.

At a company of 10 or 30 people, there's no recruiting team, no ATS gatekeeper, and no committee. The founder *is* the hiring process. This is **founder-led hiring**, and it's the single most reachable hiring situation in the entire job market — if you know how to approach it.

## Why founders are easier to reach than you think

Founders live in their inbox, move fast, and are perpetually understaffed. A thoughtful cold email from someone who clearly *gets* what they're building is a gift, not an interruption — it saves them a recruiter fee and weeks of search. The bar isn't "do you have the perfect resume," it's "will you be useful and are you low-drama."

## Finding the founder's email

- Check the company's About/Team page — small companies often list founders by name.
- Crunchbase, the company's blog byline, and podcast appearances reveal names fast.
- Apply the company's **email pattern** (usually `firstname@company.com` at startups) and verify it.
- Their personal site or X/LinkedIn bio frequently links a direct address.

## What to actually say

Founders can smell a mass-blast from the subject line. Your message has to prove three things in under 100 words: you understand the company, you can do something specific for them, and you're easy to say yes to.

### The structure

1. **Open with their world, not yours.** Reference a specific product decision, a recent launch, or a problem you noticed.
2. **One line of proof.** The most relevant thing you've built or shipped.
3. **A tiny, concrete ask.** 15 minutes, or "can I send a 2-minute Loom of what I'd change?"

## A template that works

> Subject: Noticed your signup flow loses people at step 2
>
> Hi Priya — I went through your onboarding and the email-verification step has a dead end on mobile. I've shipped this exact flow twice and could fix it fast. I'm looking for a small early-stage team to go deep with — yours fits. Worth 15 minutes, or want a quick Loom first? — Dhrumil

## What founders are actually screening for

- **Initiative:** did you do any homework, or is this a copy-paste blast?
- **Ownership:** will you figure things out without hand-holding?
- **Low ego:** the email shows you, not a performance of you.
- **Speed:** founders hire the person who replied fastest and clearest more often than the most credentialed one.

## The follow-up matters even more here

Founders are the most overwhelmed inboxes you'll email. Your first message will often get buried, not rejected. A short, value-adding follow-up three days later is expected, not pushy. (See our guide on following up without being annoying.)

> You don't need a referral to reach a founder. You need ten minutes of homework and the nerve to hit send.

jobfinder-ai is tuned for this: it spots early-stage companies that fit you, finds the founder, verifies the email, and drafts the homework-backed note — so reaching out to 20 founders a week is a 20-minute review, not a weekend.
