More than half of UK postings with a stated level want senior hires
Across 4,723 live UK postings that state a level, 54.6% ask for senior, lead, director or VP experience. That is the baseline for the whole market in this snapshot, taken on 5 October 2026.
The split by role group is wide. Product sits at the top, with 319 of 476 postings at senior or above, a share of 67%. AI / ML follows at 65.8% (156 of 237), then Design at 64.7% (108 of 167) and Software engineering at 63.1% (912 of 1,446).
In the middle are Security at 55.1% and Data at 53.6%. Finance (49.3%) and Marketing (49.2%) sit just under half.
At the bottom, Customer success has 42% of postings at senior or above, and Sales has 40.4%. Sales is also one of the largest groups here, with 1,341 postings, so it combines volume with the lowest senior share in this cut. That makes it the group most open to earlier-career hires, at 59.6% of postings below senior level.
Technical and product roles in the UK lean heavily towards experienced hires
If you are applying for Product, AI / ML, Design or Software engineering roles in the UK, expect most open postings to ask for senior experience or above. In each of these groups the senior share is above 63%.
For experienced candidates, this is useful. Software engineering alone has 912 postings at senior or above in this snapshot, and Product has 319. Lead with outcomes you owned, teams you influenced and decisions you made, because that is what senior, lead and director postings screen for.
For earlier-career candidates in these fields, the remaining postings are where to focus. Apply quickly when they appear, tailor your CV to the exact stack or product area named, and look at adjacent groups. Data, at 53.6%, has 605 postings, so it offers more room than the most senior-heavy groups.
If you are flexible on function, Sales and Customer success are the UK groups with the lowest senior share in this data. Commercial roles close to a technical product can be a practical route in while you build experience.
Where earlier-career applicants have the most room in the UK
Sales stands out. With 1,341 postings and only 40.4% at senior or above, it is the group most open to people without senior titles, at 59.6% of postings below senior level. Customer success is similar in shape, at 42% senior, though from a smaller base of 119 postings.
Finance and Marketing sit close to an even split, at 49.3% and 49.2% senior. Both are smaller groups in this snapshot, with 71 and 183 postings, so there are fewer roles to compete for overall.
Practical steps for applying now:
Check the level stated in each posting before you apply, not just the job title, since titles vary between employers.
If you are mid-level, do not rule out senior postings in groups near the middle of the chart, such as Security and Data, where requirements may be more flexible than the label suggests.
Keep a short list of target employers and check their own career sites, since that is where this data comes from.
What this snapshot can and cannot tell you
This report counts live UK job postings with a stated level on 5 October 2026. It is a single snapshot. It does not show whether seniority demand is rising or falling, and it says nothing about how many people are actually hired at each level.
Only postings with a stated level are included, which is 4,723 roles. Postings that do not state a level are left out, so the real mix across all UK openings may differ.
Role group and seniority are classified automatically from each posting. Most postings fit cleanly, but some will sit on the boundary, for example a lead role that is closer to mid-level in practice, or a hybrid product and design role.
Some groups are small. Finance has 71 postings and Security has 78, so their shares can move noticeably as a handful of roles open or close. Treat the larger groups, such as Software engineering and Sales, as the more stable signals.
Market is based on the location in each posting, so roles listed in the UK but open to other locations may still be counted here.
