Shaft Lead Hand - Underground Operations
- Location: True North Mine, Bissett, Manitoba (camp-based)
- Employment: Full-time, permanent with 1911 Gold Corporation
- Schedule: 14 days on / 14 days off, rotating day and night shifts
- Work Location: This position is based at the True North Mine site. Camp accommodations and meals are provided during scheduled work rotations. Transportation to and from the mine site is coordinated from designated travel points.
Position Overview
1911 Gold Corporation is seeking an experienced Shaft Lead Hand to provide hands-on leadership for shaft and hoisting activities at the True North Mine. Reporting to Shaft General Foreman, the Lead Hand coordinates the crew, supports training, and works alongside employees to safely move personnel, materials, and equipment through the shaft system while maintaining the shaft, loading pocket and dewatering systems, etc.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the shift crew by assigning priorities, monitoring work, and maintaining clear shift handovers.
- Work hands-on in cage and skip tending, shaft inspections and maintenance, material handling, rigging, and non-routine equipment moves.
- Coordinate personnel and material movement with Hoist Operators, Maintenance, Underground Operations, and Shaft Leadership.
- Maintain the shaft dewatering system (pumps, pipe, shaft sumps, etc)
- Verify shaft stations, conveyances, gates, loading systems, chutes, and safety devices are ready for operation, and ensure approved signaling, loading, rigging, and hoisting procedures are followed.
- Complete workplace inspections and hazard assessments; stop work and report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, spills, blockages, or interruptions.
- Coach and cross-train crew members, reinforce safe work practices, and support safety meetings.
- Maintain required shift, inspection, downtime, and material-movement records while promoting strong housekeeping, teamwork, and accountability.
- Support shutdowns, emergency response, Central Blast Operations, and other shaft activities as required.
- Ensure the safety of the shaft, hoist and UG personnel traveling in and around the cage.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of underground hard-rock mining or comparable shaft operations experience, including cage or skip tending, shaft maintenance, or hoisting support.
- Previous Lead Hand, acting supervisor, or crew-coordination experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of shaft hoisting, signaling, personnel and material movement, rigging, slinging, and safe lifting practices.
- Proven ability to lead by example, organize work, coach employees, communicate clearly, and make sound safety decisions.
- Mechanical aptitude, a valid Class 5 Driver’s License, and a strong commitment to safe production; relevant safety, first aid, mine rescue, and rigging training are assets.
Working Conditions
- Work in physically demanding underground, elevated, and confined shaft environments while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Work rotating day and night shifts in a remote, camp-based operation.
