TRAC Ottawa is looking for a creative and reliable Website Designer & WordPress Specialist to join our team.
TRAC is a social enterprise affiliated with the Social Planning Council of Ottawa. We provide creative and communications services including website design, photography, videography, livestreaming, social-media content, graphic design, and marketing support to local businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, and entrepreneurs.
We are looking for someone who can create visually appealing, modern, mobile-friendly websites and confidently make updates to existing client websites. The right person has a strong eye for layout, branding, and user experience, while also being organized, responsive, and comfortable working on several client projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build visually appealing, user-friendly, mobile-responsive websites for TRAC clients.
- Update, edit, and maintain existing websites, including pages, text, images, menus, contact forms, plugins, and basic site settings.
- Work primarily with WordPress; experience with Joomla and other website platforms is an asset.
- Turn client needs, branding, and content into clean website layouts that are easy to navigate.
- Create page mockups, wireframes, or design concepts for client review when needed.
- Ensure websites are optimized for desktop, tablet, and mobile use.
- Apply basic SEO best practices, including page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, clear page structure, and fast-loading images.
- Test website functionality, links, forms, and layouts before launch or delivery.
- Troubleshoot basic website issues and provide ongoing client website support.
- Communicate project updates, timelines, and information needed from clients clearly with the TRAC team.
- Work with TRAC’s graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and project coordinator to create cohesive client projects.
- Keep website files, passwords, credentials, and project information organized and confidential.
Required Skills
- Proven experience designing and editing professional websites.
- Strong WordPress experience, including themes, page builders, plugins, content updates, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of responsive web design and user experience.
- Good visual design skills, including typography, spacing, colour, layout, and branding.
- Familiarity with basic HTML and CSS; JavaScript knowledge is an asset.
- Experience using website builders such as Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Gutenberg, or similar tools.
- Ability to work independently, meet agreed timelines, and manage feedback/revisions professionally.
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
- A portfolio of websites you have designed, built, or substantially updated.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with nonprofits, small businesses, community organizations, or entrepreneurs.
- Experience with Joomla, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, or other content-management platforms.
- Familiarity with domain management, web hosting, DNS, SSL certificates, backups, and basic website security.
- Experience with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEO tools, or online booking/e-commerce integrations.
- Graphic-design experience using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or Figma.
- Bilingual English/French is an asset.
