The General Manager Security and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, governance, and delivery of an integrated enterprise security framework across the organisation

At the SES Band 1 level, the role operates with a high degree of independence and accountability, leading the Security Program to protect the organisation's people, property, assets, and information. The position ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information while embedding a strong, proactive security culture that supports organisational resilience and trust.

The GM Security and CISO is a key member of the senior leadership cohort, providing authoritative advice to the Executive on security risks, emerging threats, and organisational obligations. The role translates complex security challenges into strategic, risk-informed decisions that enable the organisation to meet its operational and policy objectives.

The position holds enterprise-wide accountability for compliance with Australian Government security requirements, including the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and Information Security Manual (ISM). It leads the development and implementation of security policy, governance frameworks, and assurance activities to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.

The role provides strategic oversight of:

  • Cyber Security Operations (monitoring, detection, response, and investigation)
  • Protective Security Operations (personnel, physical, information security and governance)
  • Security Risk Management and Assurance, including system authorisation and threat assessments
  • Cyber Engineering, Vulnerability Management, and Security Testing, Security Intelligence and Incident Management

In addition, the GM Security and CISO leads organisational capability uplift through targeted training, communication, and awareness initiatives, ensuring security is embedded as a shared organisational responsibility.

The role represents the organisation within the broader APS and national security ecosystem, maintaining strong, strategic partnerships with agencies including the Department of Home Affairs, ASIO, ASD, and the Office of National Intelligence. It contributes to whole-of-government security outcomes and ensures alignment with national priorities and threat environments.

As a senior leader, the General Manager Security and CISO fosters a high-performing, inclusive, and values-led team culture, while also contributing to enterprise priorities such as the implementation of the Bureau's Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2025-27.

This role is critical in shaping a modern, adaptive, and intelligence-led security posture that enables the organisation to operate with confidence in an increasingly complex and dynamic risk environment.
