The role
We are looking for a Junior Backend Engineer to help maintain and improve the production systems we run for our clients. These are live web platforms that handle thousands of users and their personal data, with integrations to CRMs, messaging providers, ad platforms and partner APIs.
This is not a traditional junior role inside a large team. You will work directly with the Head of Engineering and closely with our Senior Management Team. From your first weeks you will fix real bugs in real systems. We will support you, review your work and give you more responsibility as you grow.
Most of your time will go on backend logic, APIs, data and debugging. You will also work on admin tools and user-facing forms, but this is not mainly a UI role.
What you'll do
- Fix bugs and edge cases across APIs, forms and integrations
- Make backend changes: validation, API responses, data handling and background jobs
- Troubleshoot third-party integrations (CRM, SMS and email, ad-platform tracking, partner APIs)
- Improve admin tools, reports and dashboards our clients use every day
- Investigate issues using logs and error tracking (Sentry, PostHog) across the frontend, backend and database
- Write and update tests for backend logic
- Use AI coding tools every day, and review what they produce as critically as you would your own code

What we're looking for
- Experience building or changing backend code in Node.js (APIs, validation, data handling)
- A working understanding of databases and APIs from real project work
- Ability to debug a problem that spans the frontend, backend and database
- Projects you've built or contributed to beyond tutorials
- Confidence with Git and pull-request workflows
- Comfort working in an existing codebase that keeps changing
- Experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and an example of catching a mistake they made
- Eagerness to learn fast and take feedback well
Nice to have
- TypeScript, React or Next.js
- SQL, or an ORM such as Prisma
- Experience with third-party APIs, webhooks or queues
- Familiarity with dates and time zones (you'll meet a lot of UK summer-time bugs)
- Exposure to analytics or tracking tools (Google Tag Manager, Meta Conversions API, PostHog/Sentry)
