Marketing & E-Commerce Associate
Consignment House Gallery | Charlottesville, VA
Part-time: 10–20 hours/week | Pay Commensurate with Experience | Hybrid
About us: Consignment House Gallery is a curated gallery located on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, specializing in art, jewelry, sculpture, and distinctive one-of-a-kind objects. Our inventory is constantly evolving. We take pride in carefully selecting and presenting interesting, high-quality art. Our gallery combines the experience of discovering something unexpected with the personal service of an independent, locally owned business.
About the Position: We are looking for a creative, organized, and self-directed Marketing & E-Commerce Associate to help grow Consignment House Gallery’s online presence.
This position combines social media management, website and e-commerce management, online merchandising, and occasional retail work. The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable working independently, enjoys creating content, and is genuinely interested in art and design.
You will work closely with the owners and store staff to learn our brand voice, understand our inventory and customers, and contribute to our broader marketing strategy. Initially, there will be more hands-on direction and feedback as you learn the business and our approach; over time, we expect this person to take ownership of the day-to-day digital work.
Responsibilities:
Social Media & Content
- Manage Consignment House Gallery’s social media presence.
- Photograph new and existing inventory for social media and online use. Edit and prepare photographs for posts, stories, and other digital content.
- Create basic video content and reels.
- Develop content ideas and recurring features that fit our brand and audience.
- Respond to social media messages and comments as appropriate.
- Maintain consistency with the gallery’s established brand and marketing direction.
Website & E-Commerce
- Manage and update the Consignment House Gallery website.
- Manage the Shopify store, including creating and editing product listings, uploading and organizing photographs, writing product descriptions, optimizing SEO titles and descriptions, organizing products and collections, and updating homepage and other website content.
- Manage the connection between our store software (Liberty/Resaleworld) and Shopify, to create polished listings for the website.
- Look for opportunities to improve the online shopping experience and increase website sales.
- Apply basic SEO knowledge to website content and product listings.
Retail
- Work occasional shifts in the gallery as a backup retail associate.
- Welcome and assist customers.
- Process sales and provide excellent customer service.
- Answer questions about artwork, jewelry, sculpture, and other merchandise.
- Help maintain attractive displays and keep the gallery clean and organized.
- Assist with general day-to-day retail responsibilities as needed.
What We’re Looking For:
Must have:
- Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative without constant supervision.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good written communication skills.
- Comfort learning new software and digital tools.
- A strong visual sense and ability to recognize what makes a piece visually interesting.
- Reliability and flexibility.
- Ability to work in the gallery at least once a week for photography and video content, particularly to capture new arrivals.
- Willingness to work occasional retail shifts.
A plus:
- Experience managing social media for a business or organization.
- Photography and photo-editing experience.
- Experience creating short-form video/Reels.
- Shopify experience.
- Website management experience.
- Experience with Resaleworld/Liberty or similar inventory software.
- Basic SEO knowledge.
- E-commerce or online merchandising experience.
- Retail experience.
- Background or education in art, art history, design, photography, or a related field.
- A formal art background is not required. A genuine interest in art, jewelry, sculpture, and visual culture—and a desire to learn—is more important.
How You’ll Work With Us
This is a hybrid position with a flexible schedule combining work from home with time in the gallery. The exact schedule will be discussed based on the needs of the business and the candidate’s availability.
You will work directly with the owners and store staff to learn Consignment House’s brand language, visual style, inventory, customers, and overall marketing strategy. We want someone who can learn by observing what has worked for us in the past, contribute their own ideas, and gradually take ownership of the digital side of the business.
Because our inventory is constantly changing, this is a position where there is always something new to photograph, write about, and share.
Compensation & Growth
- Pay commensurate with experience.
- Employee discount on purchases at the Gallery.
- 10–20 hours per week to start. There is room for the position to grow in both hours and responsibility as the business and online presence grow.
- Opportunities for performance-based bonuses tied to growth in online sales.
To Apply
Please submit a resume and a brief introduction explaining why you are interested in the position and what experience or skills you would bring to Consignment House Gallery.
If you have examples of social media accounts you’ve managed, photography, video, website/e-commerce work, or other relevant creative work, please include those as well.
