Data & Modernization Architect

Summary

We are seeking a Senior Data / Systems Architect for a short-term subcontracting engagement supporting a public-sector operational modernization project.

Estimated commitment: ~75 hours over approximately 3–4 months

Compensation: $75–$100/hour, depending on experience

This is an assessment and advisory role, not a system development or implementation engagement. The architect will work alongside the project lead to provide technical expertise related to the client's existing data and systems environment.

Key responsibilities include:

Assess three disconnected databases, including data structure and integrity, reporting/search limitations, compatibility, and integration issues.

Identify data gaps, duplication, dependencies, and migration considerations.

Support development of functional requirements for future modernization solutions.

Help ensure business-process recommendations are technically sound and feasible.

Potentially provide limited technical review and QA during a future implementation phase. Ideal background:

Senior-level data, database, enterprise, or systems architecture experience.

Experience assessing legacy databases and disconnected systems.

Data migration, integration, data quality/integrity, and modernization experience.

Ability to translate business requirements into functional/technical requirements.

Experience with older or incompletely documented systems as well as modern architectures.

Public-sector experience ideal, particularly with State of California systems.

Recent relevant experience within the past five years. Able to provide three references for similar work performed within the past five years (or an explanation if three are not available).

If you are a former California State employee, you must be eligible to perform the engagement under applicable State post-employment requirements which means if you were in a decision making position for the subject department (Treasury), you must be 2 years post service.

Pay: $75.00 - $125.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Flexible schedule

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Sacramento, CA 95814
