Role: Senior Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer – VCF Environment Build & Migration
Location: Sydney
We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer to support a large-scale infrastructure modernisation program, transitioning an on-premises VMware vSphere-based platform toward VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF).
The initial phase involves establishing new infrastructure on VMware vSphere 9, followed by the hands-on build and migration of a Non-Functional Testing (NFT) environment onto the new cluster.
The role will recreate and scale the NFT environment to its required capacity using the approved architecture and build design. This includes migrating virtual machines and workloads, establishing VMware storage and networking, configuring load-balanced clusters, and enabling repeatable deployments through Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD automation.
This is a senior hands-on delivery role requiring someone who can work independently, manage cross-team dependencies, troubleshoot complex platform issues and deliver within a new-cluster environment where automation may still be evolving.
Key Responsibilities
- Build the NFT environment on the new vSphere 9 cluster in accordance with approved architecture and build designs.
- Plan and execute migration of virtual machines, application workloads and supporting services to the new environment.
- Build and configure load-balanced application clusters using F5, including networking, DNS, IP addressing and connectivity.
- Scale the new environment to the required capacity and validate compute, storage, network and application readiness before workload cutover.
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code and configuration automation using Terraform and Ansible, including Ansible Tower / Automation Platform where applicable.
- Update and maintain Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines supporting infrastructure provisioning, platform configuration and deployment.
- Perform manual configuration where automation is not yet available while progressively automating repeatable activities.
- Use Git-based version control to manage infrastructure code, configurations and pipeline definitions.
- Apply enterprise networking and security principles across VMware networking, DNS/IPAM, firewalls and load balancers.
- Support monitoring, logging and observability capabilities within the environment.
- Perform technical validation, troubleshooting, defect resolution and readiness checks throughout the migration.
- Work closely with Infrastructure, Platform Operations, CI/CD, SRE, observability, architecture, application and NFT teams.
- Maintain technical documentation, migration runbooks, build records and operational procedures.
Must-Have Skills
- Strong experience with Ansible Automation Platform / Ansible Tower, including job templates, inventories, credentials and workflow orchestration.
- Hands-on experience with Terraform and Ansible for Infrastructure as Code and configuration automation.
- Experience creating, updating and troubleshooting Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong understanding of enterprise networking, including VLANs, routing, firewalls, DNS, IPAM and load balancing.
- Practical experience with Infoblox for DNS/IPAM and F5 load balancers, or equivalent enterprise technologies.
- Scripting experience with PowerShell, Bash and/or Python.
- Strong knowledge of Git, branching, peer review and collaborative engineering practices.
- Ability to interpret architecture diagrams, low-level designs and build specifications.
- Strong troubleshooting capability across compute, storage, networking, operating systems, middleware and deployment layers.
- Experience working independently within complex infrastructure migration programs.
- Strong technical documentation and knowledge-transfer skills.
Good to Have
- Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, vCenter, ESXi and vSAN.
- Experience building VMware-based environments or clusters and migrating VMs, workloads, datastores and platform services.
- Experience with VMware storage, including vSAN and datastores.
- Experience with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and vSphere 9.
- Microsoft Azure and hybrid cloud experience.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- Understanding of microservices architecture and distributed application infrastructure.
- Experience integrating monitoring, logging or observability platforms.
- Experience with non-functional testing environments, performance-test platform migrations or production-like environment scaling.
- Experience defining migration cutover, rollback, validation and operational-readiness criteria.
