About Diraq
At Diraq, we are building scalable quantum computers using silicon quantum dot technology. Operating across Australia and the United States, our teams work at the intersection of advanced research, engineering, export-controlled technology and commercialisation. Protecting source code, research environments, technical data, and intellectual property is critical to our success.
The opportunity
As Senior Manager, Theory, you will lead a team of physicists and engineers focused on device physics and simulation. Your team will deepen the theoretical understanding of experimental results and translate modelling insights into decisions that advance Diraq’s technical milestones.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining strategy, people's leadership, program delivery, and cross-functional collaboration. You will connect theory with measurement, device engineering and quantum architecture, while building the capability, tools and operating rhythm required for a growing quantum technology company.
What you will do
- Guide device-physics modelling and simulation that improves the interpretation of experimental results and informs device and system development
- Provide technical support for test and measurement campaigns, including modelling, analysis, and interpretation of results.
- Provide technical leadership for long-distance coupling and tomographic studies.
- Own the theoretical physics research plan and delivery roadmap for the theory team, aligned to relevant company milestones.
- Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers conducting theoretical and applied physics research, setting clear priorities and high standards for scientific and technical quality.
- Exercise delegated responsibility for the team’s R&D and personnel budgets, including planning, prioritization and responsible allocation of resources.
- Lead the theoretical physics research and scientific analysis for key company-wide projects and communicate technical progress, risks, dependencies and decisions to stakeholders.
- Lead efforts to deploy and evolve cloud-computing capability supporting quantum-computing research and simulation workflows.
- Advance Diraq’s theoretical research into quantum algorithms and quantum physical systems, connecting algorithmic requirements with hardware and architecture considerations.
- Build effective collaboration across theory, measurement, engineering and other technical groups to interpret scientific findings, investigate physical phenomena and translate complex analysis into clear recommendations.
- Promote rigorous documentation, reproducibility, secure handling of technical information, and continuous improvement in team practices.
What success looks like
- The theory of roadmap is clear, prioritized and visibly connected to company milestones.
- Modelling and simulation produce timely, decision-ready insights for experiments and engineering programs.
- Cross-functional projects have strong technical alignment, transparent risks and dependable theory-team delivery.
- The team grows in capability, collaboration, and ownership while maintaining high scientific standards.
- Cloud and computational workflows are fit for purpose, secure, reproducible, and scalable for the team’s needs.
What you will bring
- A PhD, or equivalent research and industry experience, in physics, electrical engineering, quantum engineering or a closely related field.
- Deep expertise in semiconductor device physics, quantum devices, condensed-matter physics or a closely related area relevant to silicon quantum-dot systems.
- A strong record of using analytical and numerical methods to model physical systems and interpret experimental data.
- Experience leading technical specialists and creating an environment of clarity, accountability, constructive challenge and professional growth.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical strategy, translate it into executable plans and deliver through competing priorities and dependencies.
- Experience collaborating with experimental, measurement, or engineering teams on complex R&D programs.
- Proficiency in scientific programming and simulation workflows, with sound practices in version control, validation, documentation, and reproducibility.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex technical issues to specialist and non-specialist stakeholders.
- Good judgement when working with confidential research, source code, technical data, and intellectual property.
Highly regarded
- Experience with silicon spin qubits, quantum-dot devices, semiconductor nanostructures or related quantum hardware.
- Knowledge of quantum control, quantum information, quantum algorithms, or qubit coupling mechanisms.
- Experience with high-performance or cloud computing for scientific workloads, including scalable simulation or data-analysis pipelines.
- Experience supporting test and measurement campaigns in cryogenic, semiconductor or quantum-device environments.
- Experience managing R&D budgets, workforce planning, or external research collaborations.
- Experience working in a regulated, security-conscious or export-controlled technology environment.
