Senior Stack Scientist
About EH Energy Engineering
EH Energy develops fuel cell technology for heavy-duty mobility and large-scale stationary power. Our redesigned fuel cell is more compact, has higher power density and costs less to produce. We build high-performance, cost-effective fuel cell solutions to help address climate change and the move toward decentralised energy.
As Senior Stack Scientist, you will own the scientific understanding of how our stacks perform and age. You will connect cell-level electrochemistry with stack-level design, operating conditions and manufacturing, and turn that understanding into stacks with higher power density, longer life and repeatable performance.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead stack-level performance and durability investigations, from short stacks to full-size stacks.
-
Define and run stack test campaigns: polarisation, EIS, cell voltage monitoring, durability and accelerated stress tests under realistic duty cycles.
-
Analyse water management, thermal behaviour, gas distribution and cell-to-cell uniformity, and identify what limits performance.
-
Investigate stack degradation and failure modes, including post-mortem analysis, and lead root-cause work with the materials, process and design teams.
-
Develop and validate stack models (electrochemical, thermal, fluidic) to guide design choices and operating strategies.
-
Set the operating windows, conditioning and break-in procedures, and the diagnostic methods used in development and production.
-
Translate results into clear requirements for flow fields, bipolar plates, MEAs, sealing and compression.
-
Mentor junior scientists and engineers, and present results to internal stakeholders and partners.
Skills and Experience Required
-
PhD or MSc in electrochemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, physics or a related field.
-
12+ years of experience in fuel cell stack development or testing (PEM preferred).
-
Strong grasp of stack physics: water and heat management, reactant distribution, contact resistance and compression.
-
Hands-on experience with stack test benches, cell voltage monitoring, EIS and durability/AST protocols.
-
Solid understanding of MEA, GDL and bipolar plate degradation mechanisms.
-
Experience with modelling and data analysis tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB, COMSOL or similar).
-
Ability to turn complex data into clear, actionable recommendations.
-
Team player who can also work autonomously in a fast-moving environment.
-
Management experience
-
English is mandatory; French or German is a plus.
