EVO Power is seeking an experienced Senior Project / Electrical Engineer to take technical ownership of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across commercial, industrial and small utility-scale applications.

In this pivotal role, you will lead the design, review and delivery of complex electrical engineering solutions, ensuring projects are safe, compliant, commercially practical and fit for purpose. Working across the full project lifecycle, from development and detailed design through to commissioning and handover, you will play a key role in delivering innovative energy storage systems that support a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

Reporting to the Project Engineering Manager, you will apply your technical expertise to solve complex engineering challenges, guide project decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners. This is an opportunity to influence engineering excellence, drive continuous improvement, and contribute to some of Australia's most exciting energy infrastructure projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and take technical ownership of electrical engineering activities for assigned BESS projects, from design development and technical clarification through detailed design, delivery and handover.
  • Develop, maintain and improve electrical design standards, engineering procedures and design practices, ensuring solutions are safe, compliant, practical and aligned with project requirements, applicable Australian standards and network requirements.
  • Independently prepare and review engineering deliverables, including single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, cable schedules, bills of materials, technical specifications, calculations and design packages for EVO Power systems.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring and design support to Project Engineers, drafters, external engineers, integrators and subcontractors; review work for technical quality and completeness.
  • Act as a senior technical interface for EPCs, DNSPs, OEMs, consultants and internal teams, leading technical discussions, resolving design issues and coordinating engineering responses.
  • Identify, assess and manage engineering risks, design assumptions, technical deviations, scope gaps and design-stage variations; provide clear recommendations to the Project Engineering Manager and project team.
  • Review and interpret customer, EPC, DNSP and OEM drawings, specifications, codes and technical requirements, translating them into coordinated and verifiable engineering deliverables.
  • Lead or contribute to design workshops, hazard analysis, Safety-in-Design assessments, constructability reviews, design risk reviews and technical lessons-learned sessions.
  • Review and verify MV and LV system designs and equipment selections, including transformers, RMUs, switchboards, protection and metering, auxiliary supplies, cabling and communications, for system and project compliance.
  • Provide senior engineering support for FAT, SAT, site commissioning and troubleshooting; work with Commissioning, Service, Software and Product teams to investigate issues and close out technical actions.
  • Review and technically endorse test procedures, protection settings, safety controls, commissioning results and energisation-readiness evidence within the authority delegated to the role and applicable company processes.
  • Lead & support grid-compliance activities, PPC/EMS integration testing, protection and control validation, and assessment of test results against project and network requirements.
  • Maintain technical accountability for assigned engineering deliverables, including drawings, engineering risk registers, FAT/SAT and commissioning documentation, standards and GPS compliance evidence, and engineering recommendations for energisation readiness. Formal approvals and sign-offs remain subject to applicable delegations and registration requirements.

Key Selection Criteria

Technical Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience delivering electrical or project engineering for power, renewables, BESS, utilities or industrial infrastructure, including ownership of complex engineering deliverables.
  • Strong practical experience in electrical design and project engineering, with the ability to independently resolve technical issues and coordinate design interfaces across disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering, including SLDs, schematics, cable sizing, protection and control, earthing, auxiliary systems and equipment integration.
  • Experience in switchboard or substation primary and secondary design, including reviewing LV switchboard GA drawings, wiring diagrams and panel layouts; knowledge of AS/NZS standards and related testing and compliance documentation.
  • Experience specifying or reviewing LV/MV equipment, including transformers, protection relays, inverters, switchboards, RMUs and control panels.
  • Experience with utility, commercial or industrial BESS, solar, microgrids or substation projects; BESS or renewable-energy experience is highly regarded.
  • Ability to assess OEM datasheets, wiring diagrams, technical manuals and vendor submissions, and identify design gaps, interfaces and compliance risks.
  • Experience with SCADA/PLC/EMS concepts, protection coordination tools or power-system modelling software is desirable.

Personal Attributes:

Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Judgement: Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills by assessing complex technical issues, evaluating risks and alternatives, and making sound engineering judgement calls to determine the most effective course of action. Balances safety, compliance, reliability, cost, and project requirements when developing and implementing solutions.

Attention to Detail: Maintains a high degree of accuracy in engineering work by thoroughly reviewing designs, calculations, documentation, and technical outputs, ensuring compliance, quality, and reliability.

Clear communication and stakeholder-management skills: including the ability to explain complex technical issues and recommendations.

Collaboration and Mentoring: Works collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners, supports the development of less-experienced engineers through coaching and knowledge sharing, and contributes to a positive, high-performing engineering culture. Demonstrates strong technical communication, documentation, and design review skills.

Strong technical writing, document control and design-review skills.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and typically 9+ years of relevant industry experience, with demonstrated capability appropriate to a senior engineering role.
  • Must Hold NER/RPEV/RPEQ registrations.
  • Further qualifications or demonstrated specialist experience in medium-voltage design, power systems, protection or renewable-energy integration will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply electrical engineering fundamentals and relevant standards, including AS/NZS 3000, 61439 and other applicable LV/MV, switchboard, grid-connection and safety requirements.
  • Proven experience applying Safety in Design principles, risk-based decision-making, and relevant engineering standards to deliver safe and compliant engineering outcomes.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in renewable energy, BESS, grid-connected or off-grid power systems.
  • Experience with grid-connected and off-grid systems, microgrids, grid compliance or network-service-provider requirements.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards, commissioning practices and engineering assurance processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple project priorities, coordinate engineering inputs and deliver high-quality outputs to agreed schedules.
  • Working knowledge of PLC, controls or automation concepts.
  • Experience with SCADA, PPC, EMS or other energy management and plant-control systems.
  • Relevant site safety or electrical safety certifications, or willingness to obtain those required for project activities.
