Based in Jena, a city with a long tradition in optics, we conduct application-oriented research in the field of photonics. We develop innovative light-based technologies and create state-of-the-art optical components and systems along the entire process chain—from design and simulation to manufacturing, integration, and application of customer-specific solutions and prototypes. When will you join us in shaping the future?

Be part of change

The »Functional Surfaces and Coatings« Department at Fraunhofer IOF operates modern coating equipment for optical and functional thin films. We are looking for a practically oriented technical specialist to support the reliable operation, maintenance, and servicing of ALD systems. The focus is on equipment availability, safe process execution, clear documentation, and support for process trials.

These are your responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, set up, and clean ALD equipment according to defined work and safety instructions
  • Perform routine equipment checks, preventive maintenance, and straightforward repair activities
  • Replace precursor containers, gas delivery components, valves, seals, and other wear parts after appropriate training and approval
  • Support fault analysis and troubleshooting and clearly document deviations and corrective actions
  • Prepare substrates and samples, start standardized processes, and record process and quality data
  • Maintain operating, maintenance, safety, and quality documentation as well as spare-part and consumables inventories
  • Support engineers and scientists during process trials and the implementation of improved workflows

What you contribute

  • Completed technical vocational training and a master craftsman’s or technician’s degree, for example in mechatronics, electrical engineering, vacuum technology, process engineering, chemical engineering, or a comparable field
  • Practical experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of technical equipment
  • Experience with vacuum, coating, semiconductor, or comparable process systems is particularly welcome (replacement, inspection, and repair of components such as valves, lines, seals, vacuum pumps, mass flow controllers, heaters, and sensors)
  • Knowledge of ALD or CVD is a plus, but not a requirement
  • Technical understanding and a passion for independently solving practical problems
  • Willingness to handle precursors, process gases, and chemicals safely in compliance with applicable safety regulations
  • Experience in carrying out standardized processes and recording relevant process data; interest in gradually familiarizing yourself with ALD process parameters and coating technologies, including PVD in general
  • A meticulous approach to equipment checks, maintenance schedules, protocols, material inventories, and coating samples
  • Basic computer skills and a willingness to work with equipment control systems, digital maintenance records, and documentation systems
  • Reliability, a sense of responsibility, the ability to work in a team, and open communication with technicians, engineers, and scientists
  • Excellent communication skills (at least B2) in German or English, as well as working knowledge (at least B1) of the other language

What we offer

  • Cutting-edge research across a wide range of pioneering flagship projects that drive society and the economy forward
  • Networking with leading industry partners
  • Varied roles in modern workplaces and state-of-the-art laboratories as well as access to advanced coating and characterization infrastructure
  • Thorough onboarding to enable you to take on independent responsibilities
  • Working in a collegial, open-minded team
  • A family-friendly work culture with flexible work arrangements (location and hours)
  • Support services to help balance family and career: parent-child office, daycare center near the institute, life coaching, counseling services for home care and elder care, etc.
  • Targeted further education and development of your professional and personal strengths through the Fraunhofer Training Program
  • Attractive additional benefits such as a company retirement plan, deferred compensation, capital-forming benefits and a subsidy towards the Jobticket
  • Excellent links to local public transport
