Job Overview
As a Scaffolding Design Engineer / Temporary Works Design Engineer, you will be responsible for providing remote engineering design support to an Australian client delivering scaffolding and temporary works across Western Australian projects, ensuring every design is safe, buildable, technically sound and compliant with relevant Australian Standards.
This role plays a key part in preparing structural calculations, engineering assessments and detailed drawings for scaffolds and other temporary structures, modelling and checking structural stability, managing drawing revisions, and preparing complete design packages for client review, verification and approval.
The successful candidate will be a registered civil engineer with strong scaffolding or temporary works design experience, and will demonstrate a high level of technical accuracy, safety awareness, attention to detail, organisation and accountability.
Reporting
This position reports directly to the Director or designated Management Representative, with day-to-day technical direction from the client’s nominated engineering lead.
Duties and Responsibilities
Scaffold & Temporary Works Design
· Design scaffolds and temporary works, including independent, birdcage, cantilever, suspended, hanging and mobile scaffolds, loading bays, access towers, edge protection and propping
· Prepare structural calculations covering dead, live and wind loads, load combinations, member forces, connection and coupler capacities, ties, bracing and base support
· Carry out structural modelling and stability assessments using STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Autodesk Robot or equivalent software
· Assess supporting structures and ground conditions, including slabs, steelwork, plant structures and foundations, and specify required load distribution or propping
· Design using proprietary scaffold systems and tube-and-coupler arrangements in line with manufacturer data and approved configurations.
Engineering Drawings & Documentation
· Produce detailed 2D scaffold and temporary works engineering drawings in AutoCAD, including plans, elevations, sections, tie and anchor layouts, and load notes
· Develop 3D models and support BIM coordination in Autodesk Revit where required
· Prepare design packages (calculations, drawings, design basis and assumptions) for independent verification and sign-off by the client’s nominated Australian engineer where required
· Manage drawing revisions, transmittals and document control in line with client procedures.
Standards Compliance & Design Review
· Interpret and apply relevant Australian Standards, including the AS/NZS 1576 scaffolding series, AS/NZS 4576 scaffolding guidelines and AS/NZS 1170 structural design actions
· Check designs and calculations against client specifications, site constraints and applicable WA work health and safety requirements
· Review existing scaffold and temporary works designs and recommend modifications where loading, configuration or site conditions change
· Respond to design queries, review comments and requests for information (RFIs) promptly and accurately.
Project Support & Coordination
· Work with the client’s project, site and safety teams to understand scope, access requirements, sequencing and constraints
· Support projects across mining, oil and gas, commercial construction, marine and industrial environments, including shutdown and maintenance work
· Provide design input for tenders, quotations and material take-offs when requested
· Escalate design risks, unclear inputs or time-sensitive issues appropriately.
Quality, Records & Confidentiality
· Maintain accurate records of design inputs, assumptions, revisions and approvals for audit readiness and traceability
· Ensure engineering files and client information are securely stored and appropriately accessed
· Follow applicable company and client requirements relating to information security and confidentiality
· Assist with engineering-related projects and other duties as required.
Skills
· Strong knowledge and practical experience in scaffolding and temporary works design
· Sound understanding of structural analysis, load combinations, stability and connection design
· Demonstrated ability to interpret Australian engineering standards and produce designs suitable for Australian project review and approval
· AutoCAD (Essential): produce detailed 2D scaffold engineering drawings and revisions
· STAAD.Pro (Highly desirable): structural analysis, member forces and load combinations
· SAP2000 (Highly desirable): structural modelling and stability assessments
· Autodesk Revit (Desirable): 3D modelling and BIM coordination
· Autodesk Robot (Desirable): structural analysis and design
· Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and drawings
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project and shutdown deadlines
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including clear technical reporting
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
Qualifications
· Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
· Current Philippine Professional Civil Engineer registration with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), particularly given the role’s independent design calculations and engineering assessments
· Minimum 5 years’ engineering experience (5–8 years preferred), including at least 3 years in scaffolding or temporary works design
· Experience with proprietary scaffold systems commonly used in Australia is advantageous
· Experience delivering engineering designs remotely for Australian or other international clients is highly regarded
· Proficient in the effective, responsible, and productive use of AI-powered tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, or similar technologies) to improve documentation and efficiency, while independently checking all engineering outputs and maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
Preferred Project Experience
Experience supporting the following project environments in Western Australia would be particularly valuable:
· Mining operations and shutdowns, including processing plants and conveyor systems
· Oil and gas facilities, LNG plants and refineries
· Commercial construction and high-rise developments
· Marine infrastructure, ports and wharves
· Industrial maintenance and major infrastructure projects.
Desired Personal Qualities
· Safety-focused, with a clear understanding that temporary works design errors can lead to serious harm
· Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
· Methodical and accurate, with calculations and assumptions documented so others can check them
· Highly proactive and able to take initiative in solving technical challenges
· Strong sense of accountability and ownership of design quality
· Able to identify and escalate design risks appropriately
· Ability to work under pressure and meet tight shutdown and project deadlines without compromising quality
· Comfortable working remotely with an Australian team and adapting to client processes
