About Us

Sunrise Solar LLC is looking for an experienced PV Design Lead to oversee our solar design team and ensure the delivery of accurate, code-compliant, and permit-ready solar plan sets.

The ideal candidate is highly skilled in AutoCAD, knowledgeable in solar PV systems and battery storage, and experienced in leading design teams. This role will play a key part in improving our design standards, strengthening quality control, and streamlining workflows through automation.

If you have a strong background in solar design and a passion for developing efficient processes while mentoring a team, we'd love to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership

  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of PV designers and drafters.
  • Assign and prioritize design projects to meet permitting and installation deadlines.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Sales, Operations, Permitting, and Installation teams.

2. Quality Control

  • Review solar plan sets for technical accuracy, code compliance, and consistency before submission.
  • Develop and implement QC checklists and review procedures.
  • Monitor recurring design errors, AHJ corrections, and utility rejections, and implement improvements to prevent them.

3. CAD Standards and Templates

  • Develop and maintain standardized AutoCAD templates, including title blocks, layers, dimensions, text styles, blocks, and sheet layouts.
  • Maintain a library of standard details, equipment blocks, electrical diagrams, and labeling sheets.
  • Ensure templates are updated based on changes in codes, equipment, and permitting requirements.

4. Automation and Process Improvement

  • Use AutoCAD automation tools, scripts, dynamic blocks, and data extraction to improve drafting efficiency.
  • Streamline workflows between AutoCAD and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Implement automation for PDF assembly, batch plotting, form fields, stamps, markups, and other repetitive tasks.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce turnaround time while maintaining design quality.

5. Solar PV System Design

  • Design and review residential and commercial solar PV systems with and without battery storage.
  • Understand full and partial home backup, load shifting, self-consumption, and grid-tied configurations.
  • Ensure electrical designs comply with NEC requirements, including conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, rapid shutdown, interconnection methods, and energy storage systems.
  • Coordinate with engineers for structural and electrical reviews when necessary.

6. AHJ and Utility Compliance

  • Maintain current knowledge of Illinois AHJ permitting requirements, adopted NEC editions, and local amendments.
  • Understand utility interconnection requirements, particularly ComEd and Ameren Illinois.
  • Maintain an internal database of AHJ requirements and communicate updates to the design team.
  • Stay informed about Illinois Shines and other applicable state program requirements.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience designing residential and/or commercial solar PV plan sets.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a lead, senior, or supervisory design role.
  • Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD, including template creation, blocks, layouts, and sheet sets.
  • Strong experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro, particularly automation, batch processing, and PDF plan set assembly.
  • In-depth knowledge of solar PV systems with battery storage, including backup and load-shifting configurations.
  • Solid working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Familiarity with Illinois AHJ permitting requirements and utility interconnection processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a proven ability to produce accurate, permit-ready plan sets.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What We're Looking For

We need someone who can do more than oversee daily design work. We're looking for a technical leader who can establish standards, improve team performance, reduce design corrections, and build a more efficient and scalable solar design process.
