The Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with 2–5 years’ experience to join our building services design team. You will play a key role in delivering mechanical designs across a range of projects, working closely with electrical engineers, energy consultants, Revit technicians, architects, and external consultants.
This role suits someone with practical experience designing mechanical building services who is confident producing calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical solutions for live projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical building services designs across multiple projects and sectors.
- Design heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and other mechanical systems.
- Carry out mechanical calculations, including heating and cooling loads, ventilation rates, pipe sizing, duct sizing, pressure losses, and plant selection.
- Produce design drawings, schematics, schedules, specifications, and technical reports.
- Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, architectural, structural, and other specialist disciplines.
- Work closely with Revit and BIM team members to ensure coordinated and technically accurate project information.
- Attend design team meetings, coordination reviews, site visits, and client meetings where required.
- Review technical submissions, manufacturers’ information, and contractor proposals.
- Support the resolution of design, coordination, and installation issues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, British Standards, Building Regulations, and industry guidance.
- Support junior and trainee team members where required.
- Contribute to project delivery, quality assurance, and the continued development of company design standards.
Skills & Experience
- 2–5 years’ experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy or contractor environment.
- Relevant qualification in mechanical engineering, building services engineering, or a related discipline.
- Good understanding of heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and associated control systems.
- Experience producing mechanical calculations, specifications, drawings, and schedules.
- Working knowledge of relevant standards and guidance, including CIBSE guidance, British Standards, and applicable Building Regulations.
- Experience with mechanical design software such as Hevacomp, H2X, or similar.
- Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, and collaborative BIM workflows would be beneficial.
- Ability to manage workload and contribute to project deadlines.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary design team.
