Hillsborough College is seeking a full-time faculty member for the Medical Laboratory Science Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) 4+1 Program.
The faculty member will provide didactic, student laboratory, and clinical education to students preparing for professional practice as Medical Laboratory Scientists. Instruction may include hematology and hemostasis, clinical chemistry, immunohematology and transfusion medicine, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis and body fluids, molecular diagnostics, laboratory operations, and other areas of medical laboratory science.
Teaching assignments will be based on the faculty member's education, professional experience, certification, licensure when applicable, and demonstrated areas of expertise. The successful candidate is not expected to have equal expertise in every laboratory discipline.
In addition to classroom and student laboratory instruction, the full-time faculty member will work with students and preceptors at the program's affiliated clinical laboratories as students complete their clinical education experiences.
Job Duties:
- Provide didactic and laboratory instruction in assigned Medical Laboratory Science courses.
- Teach laboratory principles, methodology, instrumentation, quality control, troubleshooting, result interpretation, clinical correlation, safety, and professional practice at the Medical Laboratory Scientist level.
- Supervise and instruct students in the College's Medical Laboratory Science teaching laboratory.
- Develop and maintain lectures, laboratory exercises, competency assessments, examinations, case studies, and other instructional materials.
- Evaluate student academic achievement, laboratory competency, and professional behaviors.
- Provide academic guidance, mentoring, and scheduled instructional support to Medical Laboratory Science students.
- Work with students and clinical preceptors at affiliated clinical laboratories during clinical education rotations.
- Conduct clinical site visits and student rounding and assist with evaluation of student progress and clinical competencies.
- Maintain communication with clinical affiliates regarding student education and program needs.
- Participate in curriculum development and revision, program assessment, accreditation activities and documentation, and continuous quality improvement.
- Participate in development and review of program policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional competency and participate in continuing professional development.
- Participate in College and program service activities consistent with the responsibilities of full-time faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a biological or chemical science related to the assigned instructional area.
- Current national certification at the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (MLS/MT) professional level, either as a generalist or through an appropriate categorical/specialty credential relevant to the assigned instructional discipline, from a certifying organization recognized by the Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel.
- Minimum of 3 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience or experience in clinical laboratory science education in the assigned instructional area.
- Demonstrated knowledge and professional proficiency in the clinical laboratory areas assigned for instruction.
- Demonstrated competency and ability to provide effective instruction at the Medical Laboratory Scientist level.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, clinical preceptors, and affiliated healthcare organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, education, biological or chemical science.
- Current ASCP Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT).
- Current and valid State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel license appropriate to the assigned laboratory discipline(s).
- Previous teaching experience in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or another health sciences program.
- Experience serving as a clinical preceptor, laboratory trainer, competency assessor, lead technologist, supervisor, or laboratory educator.
- Professional experience in multiple major clinical laboratory disciplines.
- Additional relevant categorical or specialty certification(s).
- Familiarity with NAACLS-accredited laboratory education programs.
Pay Rate:
Faculty members will be assigned to the appropriate salary grade based on the contract with the faculty union.
- Grade 2: Master’s Degree with 18 graduate semester hours in the field $53,492.64
- Grade 2+: Master’s Degree with 60 graduate semester hours in the field $56,232.06
- Grade 1: Earned Doctor in major field $58,92.71
