The Role

The Electrical Commissioning Engineer is responsible for supporting and executing commissioning activities for electrical systems throughout the construction and handover phases of projects across a diverse portfolio, with a primary focus on the Mission Critical sector. The role involves planning, witnessing, testing, troubleshooting, documenting, and verifying that electrical systems perform in accordance with design intent, project specifications, applicable codes, and client requirements.

The successful candidate will work closely with client representatives, contractors, consultants, equipment vendors, project managers, and facility operators to ensure systems are safely commissioned and ready for operation and occupancy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical & Commissioning Delivery

  • Assist with ensuring all deliverables align with client commissioning frameworks.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of project Commissioning Management Plans (CMP).
  • Assist with managing General Contractor Cx/Services meetings & CxA/ICA meetings.
  • Reviews of General Contractor, Subcontractors & Vendor Commissioning Management Plans & Energisation Plans.
  • Reviews of factory witness testing method statements, attendance at factory and final reporting.
  • Reviews of contractors & vendors Cx L1 to Cx L3 Test Scripts, Installation & Test Plans, Installation & Test Checklists and Test Method Statements.
  • Preparation of Cx L0 to Cx L6 CMP, Test Scripts, Installation & Test Plans, Installation & Test Checklists and Test Method Statements requirements.
  • Preparation of Cx L4 & Cx L5 Test Scripts, Test Plans, Programme & Cx L6 Handover documentation.
  • Attendance at Factory Witness Tests (FWT) and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), including preparation of reports under supervision.
  • Carrying out on-site inspections, pre-functional checks and functional performance testing.
  • Attending project and internal meetings and preparing meeting minutes as required.
  • Maintaining accurate records of commissioning activities, progress prerequisites and issue tracking.
  • Entering and maintaining commissioning data within project commissioning management software.
  • Reviewing of project schedules, drawings, manuals and technical submittals.
  • Assisting senior team members in identifying and tracking project and operational risk.
  • Working closely with the commissioning team and General Contractor’s team to support agreed commissioning and processes which align with project objectives.
  • Assist your Project Cx PM & Lead manage project site witnessing requirements.
  • Supporting coordination of third-party inspections and sign-offs where required.
  • Preparation of final commissioning reports for projects.
  • Assist your Project Cx PM & Lead manage project programmes in collaboration with Main Contractors, subcontractors & vendors.
  • Assist your Project Cx PM & Lead prepare and manage weekly & monthly project reporting for clients and internal leadership.
  • Other tasks as required.

People and Culture

  • Assist your Project Cx PM & Lead to mentor and develop commissioning team members across projects and sectors.
  • Support training, quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Actively contribute to the wider HDR Commissioning business.
  • Champion and demonstrate HDR values and culture.
  • Encourage collaboration, team cohesion and alignment with HDR values.

Safety & Quality Leadership

  • Work closely with HDR’s safety team to develop and refine safe work systems related to commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all projects and reports within the group are technically compliant, prepared to a consistent quality and standard. Maintain regular ‘in house’ reviews and checks.
  • Support the development and implementation of company-wide safety protocols.
  • Promote quality, continuous improvement, and technical excellence across all commissioning activities.

ABOUT YOU

A mid-career commissioning professional with hands-on experience in electrical systems testing, commissioning, or construction who is looking to further develop technical expertise while contributing to the successful delivery of complex projects. The candidate should be proactive, detail-oriented, safety-focused, and capable of working effectively in fast-paced project environments.

Ideal Attributes Include

  • Detailed technical knowledge of electrical building services systems.
  • An early to mid-career professional with an interest in building services, commissioning and facility engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning or facilities engineering, preferably within Data Centre and/or Health sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience (through internships, placements, previous experience or coursework) to building systems including electrical LV and HV power distribution systems, protection systems, TX’s switchboards, UPS’s, generators, fuel systems, SCADA, EPMS & BMS etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with onsite based engineering work is highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting equipment inspections and Factory Witness / Factory Acceptance Tests (FWT/FAT).
  • An interest in Mission Critical (Data Centre) and/or Health sector projects.
  • Exposure to the commissioning process with experience conducting equipment inspection, Factory Witness Tests, and Factory Acceptance Tests is highly advantageous.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Microsoft Project and Automated Commissioning Management Systems (ACxMS).
  • Creative and solutions focused mindset.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to consistently produce high quality project work.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication skills and can work well autonomously, as well as being part of a team.
  • You are proactive, organised and ready to take ownership of commissioning outcomes on complex projects.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation quality.
  • Effective time management and organisational skills.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites both domestically and internationally as required.
  • Strong alignment with HDR values and a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (University or TAFE) in engineering, building services, or related discipline.
  • Electrical trade qualifications with commissioning experience will also be considered.
  • Professional accreditations such as AABC Commissioning Group (ACG) Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA), Commissioning Specialists Association (CSA) Level 6, Building Commissioning Association BCxA, ASHRAE BCxP, Green Star AP, LEED AP, or LEED Associate are highly regarded.
