**About MetricAid**
MetricAid builds physician scheduling software that hospitals actually rely on. Founded by an emergency department chief to solve his own department's scheduling, we've grown from a handful of Ontario hospitals to 170\+ organizations on four continents. Our demand\-aligned, preference\-based scheduling reduces patient wait times and physician burnout. The schedule we produce every night decides who is standing in an emergency department tomorrow. Reliability isn't a slogan here; it's a clinical dependency.
We're a small, senior team in the middle of an ambitious platform modernization: decomposing a proven monolith into Go services, with an external engineering partner accelerating delivery. You'd be joining a product with real users, real constraints, and no shortage of decisions still to make.
**The Role**
You'll build across the whole product: the React web application schedulers live in all day, the React Native app physicians carry in their pockets, and the Go services and PostgreSQL databases underneath both. This is genuinely full\-stack, not a frontend role with an API on the side.
You'll also help move the platform forward. A significant part of the work is migrating capability off the legacy system onto the modern stack without disrupting hospitals that are using it right now. That means you'll spend real time understanding code you didn't write before replacing it, and you'll be judged on whether the replacement is at least as good as what it displaced.
You'll work directly with the CTO, our Product Owner, and the rest of a small engineering team. The team is small enough that what you ship is visible and what you decide sticks.
**What You'll Do**
● Design, build, test, deploy and maintain features across the React web app and the React Native mobile app, to production quality, including the UI and UX details that decide whether a physician trusts the tool.
● Build and extend backend services and REST and gRPC APIs in Go, writing idiomatic code and using Go's concurrency primitives deliberately rather than incidentally.
● Own PostgreSQL as a first\-class part of your work: schema design, complex queries, indexing strategy, query optimization, and migrations you'd be comfortable running against production.
● Migrate legacy capability onto the modern stack: document what exists, design the replacement, and execute the cutover with minimal disruption and no regression in functionality, performance or reliability.
● Write and maintain automated tests that earn their keep: unit, integration and end\-to\-end, with coverage on every change and continuous improvement of the testing tooling itself.
● Participate fully in agile delivery: stand\-ups, sprint planning, reviews and retros; estimate honestly, surface blockers early, and demo your own work. ● Review code and get reviewed: give feedback that's useful and take feedback well. ● Contribute to architecture and tooling decisions, explain technical trade\-offs to non\-technical colleagues, and mentor developers earlier in their careers.
**What You Bring**
● 5\+ years building and shipping production web applications end to end: you've owned features from schema to screen.
● Strong React, and real React Native experience shipping to the App Store and Google Play (or a convincing story about why you'll pick it up fast).
● Production Go: services, HTTP and/or gRPC APIs, and a working understanding of goroutines, channels and context.
● Genuine PostgreSQL depth: you can read a query plan, add the right index, and write a migration that won't lock a busy table.
● Automated testing as a habit, not an afterthought, with a clear view of what's worth testing and what isn't.
● Experience working in, or replacing, a legacy codebase, and the patience that requires.
● Clear written communication. We're remote\-first and asynchronous; the quality of your writing is part of the quality of your work.
**Nice to Have**
● Healthcare, PHI, or another regulated domain where getting the data wrong has consequences beyond a bug ticket.
● Monolith\-to\-services migration experience, especially where the monolith had to keep running throughout.
● Scheduling, optimization, or constraint\-solving problems. Our domain is full of them. ● Mobile release engineering: signing, CI, TestFlight and Play Console pipelines. ● Experience collaborating with an external development partner.
**How We Work**
Our four values are Passion, Excellence, Authenticity, and Kindness, and we hire for them as seriously as for the stack. We're remote\-first with a small office in North Bay, Ontario; we favour asynchronous written communication, small blast\-radius changes,
and giving engineers real ownership. We work in short iterations against a real backlog, and we're actively tightening how acceptance criteria get written so that what "done" means is agreed before work starts rather than argued afterwards.
Requirements will change, because hospitals change. We'd rather you respond well to that than pretend it won't happen.
**Compensation \& Benefits**
● $90,000 – $110,000 per year, commensurate with experience
● Health, dental, and vision benefits
● Remote\-first flexibility and home\-office support
● Professional development budget
