The Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Fire Alarm Testing & Commissioning Engineer to join our growing Fire & Security team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out fire alarm testing, commissioning, fault finding, servicing and remedial works across a range of commercial and facilities management environments.

The role will involve working on a variety of fire alarm systems and requires someone who is technically competent, customer focused and able to work independently while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) of fire alarm systems.
  • Complete routine fire alarm testing and inspection in accordance with relevant standards and manufacturer requirements.
  • Carry out fire alarm commissioning and testing of new installations and alterations.
  • Test and commission fire alarm panels, detectors, sounders, call points and associated equipment.
  • Test interfaces between fire alarm systems and other building services, including door releases, lifts, smoke control systems, gas suppression/shut-off systems and other life safety systems.
  • Carry out fault finding and diagnostics on fire alarm systems.
  • Identify and rectify faults where possible.
  • Complete remedial works and system alterations.
  • Carry out cause-and-effect testing and verification.
  • Assist with fire alarm installation and modifications where required.
  • Complete testing and commissioning documentation accurately.
  • Complete service sheets, commissioning certificates and other relevant documentation.
  • Provide clear reports detailing defects, recommendations and remedial requirements.
  • Liaise professionally with customers, site managers and other contractors while working on site.
  • Ensure all works are completed safely and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Ensure all work is carried out to the required standards and relevant legislation.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools and testing equipment to a high standard.
  • Provide technical support and advice to other engineers where required.
  • Attend reactive call-outs and emergency faults when required.
  • Work flexibly to meet customer requirements, including occasional out-of-hours works.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience working as a Fire Alarm Engineer.
  • Strong experience in fire alarm testing and commissioning.
  • Good understanding of fire alarm systems and associated equipment.
  • Experience fault finding and diagnosing fire alarm faults.
  • Ability to read and understand fire alarm drawings and cause-and-effect documentation.
  • Good understanding of relevant British Standards and fire alarm requirements.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Good IT and mobile technology skills for completing electronic job records and certification.

Desirable

  • FIA qualifications, particularly FIA Unit 1 and Unit 5 or equivalent.
  • Experience with multiple fire alarm manufacturers and control panels.
  • Experience working within Facilities Management or compliance environments.
  • Experience with BS 5839.
  • Experience carrying out commissioning and verification of fire alarm systems.
  • Experience working with fire alarm interfaces and cause-and-effect systems.
  • Electrical qualifications or experience.
  • Previous experience working on commercial or retail sites.

Qualifications

Ideally, candidates will hold relevant FIA qualifications and have demonstrable experience in fire alarm testing and commissioning.

Relevant qualifications may include:

  • FIA Fire Detection & Alarm Systems qualifications.
  • BS 5839-related training.
  • Electrical qualifications.
  • Manufacturer-specific fire alarm training.

MIES will also support ongoing training and professional development where appropriate.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
