Role Description

The Automation & Digital Systems Lead is a pivotal role responsible for architecting, scaling, and optimizing automation and control systems within a rapidly evolving pharmaceutical and natural health products manufacturing environment. This individual will serve as the single point of accountability for PLC, HMI, and BMS ecosystems, ensuring operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and future-ready system design. The role requires a blend of hands-on technical depth, systems thinking, and strategic foresight to enable efficient, compliant, and scalable manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own end-to-end lifecycle of automation, control, and facility systems across PLC, HMI, and BMS platforms
  • Architect and continuously refine automation strategies aligned with business growth and operational scale-up
  • Lead integration of manufacturing equipment, utilities, and environmental systems into a unified control framework
  • Ensure robust operation and optimization of HVAC, and critical utility systems through BMS (Desigo)
  • Drive system reliability through proactive monitoring, alarm management, and performance optimization
  • Establish and enforce automation standards, governance, and system design principles
  • Lead and support commissioning, qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), and validation of automated systems
  • Ensure sustained compliance with GMP, FDA, and Health Canada regulatory expectations
  • Build and maintain high-quality system documentation including SOPs, functional specifications, and change controls
  • Partner cross-functionally with Validation, QA, Manufacturing, and Engineering to align system performance with business needs
  • Manage vendor relationships, system integrators, and external technical partners to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Oversee backup strategies, and lifecycle management of automation infrastructure
  • Enable data visibility through system integration, trending, and reporting capabilities to support operational decisions
  • Identify and execute continuous improvement opportunities that enhance compliance, efficiency, and system scalability

Key responsibilities:

  • Proven track record leading automation and control systems in regulated manufacturing environments, ideally pharmaceutical or natural health products
  • Deep technical expertise across PLCs, HMI, and BMS platforms, with hands-on implementation and troubleshooting capability
  • Strong command of GMP principles, computerized system validation, and data integrity requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to design, scale, and integrate complex systems in dynamic or startup environments
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business needs into robust, future-ready technical solutions
  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making capabilities under evolving conditions
  • Influential communicator capable of bridging technical and business stakeholders and driving cross-functional alignment

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5 years of relevant automation, controls, or industrial systems experience within regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or Natural Health Products manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, BMS platforms, and industrial communication networks.

Note: Canadian work experience is not required. Equivalent international experience is accepted.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000 per year
