Trainee Estimator & Project Coordinator

£30,000–£32,500 per year, depending on experience

Full-time | Permanent | Monday–Friday

The Opportunity

We are New Homes Flooring South, a multi-award-winning, family-run flooring contractor based in Shinfield, Reading.

Specialising in the new-build housing sector, we also operate successful wholesale, commercial, blinds and retail divisions, supplying and installing quality flooring across the South of England.

Our company has grown through hard work, trust and teamwork. We value people who want to build a long-term career with us — those who enjoy a challenge, take pride in what they do and like being part of a supportive team that works hard and has fun along the way.

We are looking for an ambitious, organised and practical Trainee Estimator & Project Coordinator to join our Operations Team.

This is a varied, hands-on role where you'll learn how to take responsibility for new-build developments from survey and planning through to material procurement, programming and installation.

You'll spend time both in the office and out on live construction sites, working with our Operations Manager, experienced team members and company Directors.

Previous flooring experience is not required. We'll teach you the industry.

What You'll Be Doing..

Surveying & Estimating

You'll be trained to visit new-build developments and carry out detailed surveys of houses, apartments and other areas before flooring installation.

Using the quantified construction drawings from tender stage alongside your physical site survey, you'll learn to:

  • Measure properties accurately using laser measuring equipment
  • Use Bluebeam to work with construction drawings and plans
  • Check actual site measurements against drawings
  • Identify flooring specifications and requirements
  • Assess subfloor conditions
  • Carry out moisture testing using Tramex equipment
  • Check floor levels and identify preparation requirements
  • Record all information required for installation
  • Take photographs and maintain accurate survey records
  • Identify potential problems before installation
  • Ensure plots are ready and properly planned for the works required

The objective is simple: when our fitting team arrives, they should have the correct materials, accurate information and everything required to complete the job successfully.

Planning & Material Procurement

Once you've surveyed a plot or project, you'll learn how to turn that information into an efficient installation plan.

You'll:

  • Create and maintain planning workbooks for each plot/job
  • Calculate accurate material requirements
  • Plan materials efficiently to minimise waste
  • Check and utilise available stock wherever possible
  • Procure flooring and associated materials
  • Monitor supplier lead times
  • Coordinate requirements with our Warehouse Team
  • Ensure materials arrive in time for programmed installation dates
  • Identify shortages or potential problems before they affect the programme

You'll learn that good planning isn't simply ordering enough material — it's making sure we have the right material, in the right quantity, in the right place, at the right time.

Project Coordination & Programming

As your knowledge and confidence develop, you'll progressively take responsibility for your own new-build developments.

Working with our Operations Manager and Operations Team, you'll learn to:

  • Build relationships with Site Managers and Site teams
  • Obtain and understand construction programmes
  • Identify upcoming plots and installation requirements
  • Agree and coordinate installation dates
  • Programme flooring works
  • Coordinate fitting teams
  • Respond to programme changes
  • Keep sites informed
  • Monitor upcoming workload
  • Solve day-to-day operational problems
  • Escalate issues before they affect delivery
  • Attend developments when required
  • Check completed works
  • Obtain site sign-off so completed works can progress through invoicing
  • Work with our Customer Care Coordinator where required

As you progress, you'll be trusted with your own portfolio of developments and will increasingly take ownership of them from survey through to successful installation.

More Than One Part of the Business

You'll be based within and work closely with our Operations Team, but one of the advantages of joining New Homes Flooring is the exposure you'll gain to the wider business.

You'll work alongside and support our:

  • Operations Team
  • Warehouse Team
  • Commercial Team
  • Wholesale Division
  • Blinds Division
  • Retail Flooring Division

This will give you a broad understanding of how a successful flooring contractor operates — from products, stock and procurement through to construction sites, customers and completed installations.

Training & Development

We don't expect you to arrive knowing how to do all of this.

You'll receive hands-on, structured training from experienced members of our team.

We'll train you in areas including:

  • Flooring products and installation methods
  • Construction drawings
  • Bluebeam
  • Excel
  • Our CRM and operational systems
  • Measuring and surveying
  • Moisture testing
  • Subfloor assessment
  • Material planning
  • Procurement
  • Stock utilisation
  • Programming and scheduling
  • New-build construction
  • Site communication
  • Customer service
  • Cost awareness
  • Health & Safety
  • Project coordination

You'll also receive relevant external training and qualifications as your role develops, including courses such as CSCS and SMSTS where appropriate.

As your knowledge grows, so will your responsibility.
