As a Senior Data Engineer of our Data Analytics Services at eHealth NSW, you will help make a real difference in healthcare by playing a role in shaping the future of healthcare analytics. Reporting to the Principal Data Platform Lead, you will collaborate with a team of digital healthcare specialists, analytics experts, data engineers and other technology professionals to develop and continuously enhance a suite of analytics products. Your work will empower healthcare providers to improve patient outcomes and streamline care delivery.
This role offers the opportunity to use modern data and analytics tools and be part of the team responsible for designing and building new data products using Snowflake and AWS product stack.
This role requires deep, hands-on systems engineering expertise. If your experience is limited to writing SQL queries for reporting, managing dashboards, or guided cloud tutorials, this position will not be the right fit.
In this role, you will:
- Design production-grade pipelines using Snowflake, the AWS ecosystem, and Open Table formats (Iceberg)
- Collaborate with other data engineers, solution architects, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives involving large and complex datasets and databases.
- Follow coding standards, quality assurance practices, and architectural patterns that enhance security, maintainability, and performance.

About You
We are looking for someone who has:
- Extensive hands-on experience delivering outcomes in large, complex engineering environments, ideally within product development teams where reliability and scale are critical and non-negotiable.
- Demonstrated ability to design and build production-grade data pipelines using at least one major cloud platform (Snowflake, AWS). You must have direct, practical experience—not theoretical understanding and conceptual exposure.
- Python mastery beyond scripting: experience with packaging, modular design, and async processing, with a clear focus on performance and writing concise and maintainable code for long-lived production systems.
- Deep database and SQL expertise, including hands-on experience architecting data products across multiple database technologies. A solid understanding of database internals, query execution behaviour, and performance trade-offs is essential.
- Practical experience with open table formats (e.g. Iceberg), including a clear understanding of optimisation techniques, metadata management, and real-world operational considerations.
- Proven ability to architect scalable, fault-tolerant, and secure data pipelines, leveraging cloud-native patterns, best-practice security controls, and modern data engineering tooling.
- Track record of building, maintaining, and optimising complex data models, with an emphasis on scalability, data quality, schema governance, and reliability at scale.
- Ability to independently deliver high-quality data solutions with minimal guidance—comfortable operating in ambiguous environments and making sound technical decisions.
- Practical experience with serverless computing platforms, such as AWS Lambda and Snowflake serverless features.
- Strong applied knowledge of distributed computing principles, supported by real-world experience processing unstructured and semi-structured data at scale.
