About the Team
It’s an exciting time in technology, and that buzz is felt throughout PetSmart! We are continuing to grow at a faster pace and we want to continue to provide best-in-class experiences for pets and pet parents. Our Technology team has 6 different departments: Information Security, Service Delivery, Business Enabling Systems, eCommerce & Marketing Technology, Data and Stores, Services & Supply Chain.
Whether it’s online or in our stores, the work that the IT team does is instrumental in PetSmart’s success. We have a strategic and actionable plan underway and are looking for associates who are just as excited about it as we are.
About the Location
Collaborative Work Environment:
At PetSmart, teamwork and connection are core to how we thrive. This role is based at our Phoenix Home Office, with an expectation of working a minimum of four days in the office each week. In a standard work week, associates may work up to one remote “flex day” (with leader approval). Our hybrid approach is designed to foster strong collaboration while also supporting flexibility and individual success.
About the Job
At PetSmart, we’re passionate about pets and the people who love them. Our mobile team helps pet parents connect with the products, services, and support they need. We’re looking for a Mobile Software Engineer who brings thoughtful engineering, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to building useful, reliable mobile experiences. You’ll independently deliver meaningful features in our mobile apps and own components from technical design through release and ongoing support. Working with Product Owners, designers, QA, backend engineers, and business partners, you’ll help turn customer and business needs into well-built experiences.
What you’ll do
==================
- Build native Ios mobile experiences. Develop and maintain features with attention to usability, accessibility, performance, and reliability.
- Own features and components. Take work through technical design, implementation, testing, release, and follow-up. Work independently while seeking input when complexity, risk, or dependencies call for it.
- Help shape achievable plans. Analyze requirements, contribute informed estimates, break stories into practical tasks, and explain technical constraints and trade-offs.
- Make thoughtful design decisions. Produce feature-level technical designs that fit established architecture and conventions. Partner with senior engineers and a Lead Engineer on decisions with broader impact.
- Connect mobile experiences with supporting systems. Integrate APIs and third-party services, working with partner teams to clarify contracts, dependencies, and failure scenarios.
- Build quality into delivery. Write maintainable code and appropriate automated tests, contribute to code and design reviews, and collaborate with QA on customer journeys and edge cases.
- Improve reliability. Diagnose issues independently, add useful logging and validation, use monitoring to understand production behavior, and address underlying causes to reduce repeat defects.
- Contribute to team practices. Participate in planning, refinement, reviews, and retrospectives. Suggest practical improvements and evaluate or prototype tools and approaches when useful.
- Communicate and support others. Keep progress, risks, and dependencies visible. Share knowledge, pair on challenging work, provide constructive feedback, and mentor junior engineers.
You’ll make decisions within the features and components you own, with support from senior engineers and the Lead Engineer for broader architecture and project direction.
What you’ll bring
=====================
- Professional experience building and shipping native mobile applications for iOS, with the ability to deliver meaningful features independently. Around three or more years of relevant experience is a useful guide; demonstrated skills and equivalent experience matter.
- Strong proficiency in native mobile development using Swift for iOS.
- Experience building mobile interfaces with SwiftUI, including managing UI state and integrating with existing platform components such as UIKit.
- Experience handling asynchronous work and data updates using Swift concurrency (async/await), including cancellation, error handling, and safe UI updates.
- An understanding of iOS mobile application lifecycle, navigation, and state management, with experience structuring features into maintainable, testable components.
- Experience integrating APIs and handling loading states, errors, and local data persistence.
- Experience writing automated tests and using platform debugging and profiling tools to investigate defects and performance issues.
- Familiarity with Git, pull requests, continuous integration, automated builds, and mobile release workflows.
- Experience working in an Agile team and contributing to refinement, estimation, and delivery.
- The ability to understand business requirements, explain technical choices clearly, and collaborate with engineering and non-engineering partners.
- A practical approach to balancing delivery needs with maintainability and longer-term technical direction.
- Relevant software engineering knowledge gained through professional experience, education, or a combination of both.
Helpful experience
======================
These are additional strengths, rather than requirements for every candidate:
- Experience developing for both iOS and Android, particularly with Swift/SwiftUI and Kotlin/Jetpack Compose.
- Building accessible mobile interfaces and supporting assistive technologies.
- Working with app store submissions, release automation, and staged rollouts.
- Using crash reporting, analytics, and performance monitoring to improve released features.
- Building retail, e-commerce, loyalty, or appointment-booking experiences.
- Working on applications with a large customer base or integrations across multiple enterprise systems.
- Improving development practices, evaluating new technologies, or mentoring junior engineers.
Bring your perspective
==========================
Great mobile experiences come from people with different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of thinking. Even if you don’t meet every preferred qualification, if you can independently deliver quality mobile software, enjoy collaborating, and want to make everyday experiences better for pet parents, we’d love to hear from you.
