That’s what we do.
Our platform combines IoT devices, mobile credentials, and cloud-native architecture to power secure access for Fortune 200 companies and global enterprises.
While we are evolving from a hardware-centric model to a platform- and services-driven business, hardware remains an essential part of our solution.
About the role:
The Product Manager - Devices is responsible for transitioning our hardware products from Prototype to Production. This position plays a key role on the Product team, ensuring products make a smooth, efficient transition to production. The position is critical to Safetrust’s continued growth by ensuring the Production team receives reliable designs they can predictably scale into volume production.
Working closely with executive leadership, Engineering, Procurement, Production, Quality, and external manufacturing partners, this position serves as a central point of coordination for hardware and device activities. The role ensures that requirements, deliverables, technical dependencies, and outstanding issues are identified, communicated, and followed through to completion. While executive leadership sets overall product strategy and direction, this individual plays a critical role in ensuring nothing is overlooked as products move from prototype into production, and ongoing improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Productization of Design
- Direct and align pre-production prototype builds with contract manufacturers for engineering validation, internal testing, and customer evaluation.
- Collaborate with the Production team to develop work instructions to assemble PCBAs from contract manufacturers into pre-production products for internal testing and select customer evaluation.
- Use internal industrial design resources to develop 3D-printed prototype cases, then transition them into production-ready cases that meet industry certification requirements (e.g., IP65, UL294).
- Refine enclosure, faceplate, and connector designs to optimize manufacturability, durability, and product aesthetics.
- Manage tooling and mold development in close collaboration with Procurement to prepare for scalable, high-volume production.
- Maintain thorough process documentation following SOPs to achieve full compliance during ISO 9001 audits.
- Organize and manage third-party penetration security evaluations when required.
- Identify gaps in product design, documentation, testing, or manufacturing requirements, and coordinate with the appropriate teams to address them before production release.
Production Readiness
- Oversee the seamless transition of hardware offerings from pre-production phases into volume manufacturing.
- Ensure all deliverables required for manufacturing release are complete, accurate, and approved including:
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Assembly documentation
- Test procedures
- Product personalization procedures
- Packaging requirements and standards
- Labeling, traceability, and serialization requirements
- Identify and resolve gaps that could impact manufacturability, yield, quality, cost, or schedule.
- Align cross-functional teams—including Engineering, Quality, Procurement, and Production—to verify complete readiness prior to releasing products for manufacturing.
- Track production readiness milestones, outstanding deliverables, and cross-functional dependencies, escalating risks or delays as needed.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, including EVT, DVT, PVT, and initial production ramp-up.
Manufacturing Quality and Product Stabilization Documentation
- Work with Engineering and Production teams to develop, validate, and maintain complete manufacturing documentation, configuration controls, and production support assets to enable scalable, repeatable operations.
- Support initial production ramp-up to ensure stable manufacturing performance, consistent product quality, and successful operational handoff.
- Coordinate root-cause investigation and corrective actions to address product and manufacturing issues identified during production ramp-up.
- Support ongoing product improvements and hardware changes necessary to maintain product reliability and manufacturing consistency.
Testing & Configuration Management
- Collaborate with Test Engineering to establish and implement all necessary test software and fixtures.
- Coordinate engineering change orders (ECOs), product revisions, and configuration updates to ensure affected teams have accurate, up-to-date information.
- Partner with Product Management and Engineering teams to establish standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for product configuration.
- Identify missing or inconsistent technical documentation and ensure appropriate owners address outstanding requirements.
Cross-Functional Program Coordination
- Serve as a central point of coordination between executive leadership, Engineering, Procurement, Production, Quality, and external partners for hardware and device initiatives.
- Maintain visibility into project milestones, responsibilities, outstanding decisions, and dependencies across hardware development and production activities.
- Proactively identify gaps, unresolved issues, and activities that may lack clear ownership, ensuring appropriate follow-through and resolution.
- Support the coordination of hardware product improvements, revisions, and lifecycle activities following production release.
Supply Chain & Vendor Coordination
- Support Procurement and contract manufacturers to ensure components have reliable sources.
- Assist with alternate component qualification and lifecycle risk management.
- Manage EVT/DVT/PVT stages and direct pre-production build execution.
Quality & Compliance
- Partner with Certification and Engineering teams to manage necessary testing, complete requirement documentation, and execute corrective action plans.
- Identify compliance and certification prerequisites and integrate them directly into hardware development timelines and manufacturing roadmaps.
Samples
- Work with Product, Sales Engineering, and Sales to plan and deliver pre-production small quantities for evaluation by internal teams and select customers.
- Coordinate feedback from internal and customer evaluations with appropriate technical teams to support product improvements and production readiness.
Skills & Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in hardware product management, NPI, manufacturing engineering, or related technical hardware roles.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated ownership or significant involvement in at least 2 successful projects bringing electronic hardware product launches into volume production.
- Strong understanding of:
- Electronic assemblies
- PCB-based products
- Manufacturing processes
- Plastics development and manufacturing
- Supply chain operations
- Experience managing BOMs and other manufacturing documentation.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with NPI processes, including EVT, DVT, PVT, and production readiness.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership abilities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global environment.
- Demonstrated ability to identify gaps, anticipate issues, and drive accountability and follow-through without direct management authority.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with physical access control systems, electronic security devices, RFID readers and cards, or related security hardware.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and hardware suppliers outside the US, especially in Asia.
- Experience supporting hardware product improvements, lifecycle changes, and manufacturing issue resolution.
Success Profile:
The ideal candidate is:
- Experienced in delivering on-time production releases.
- Comfortable operating in both strategic and hands-on execution environments.
- Experienced supporting products transitioning from prototype into full-scale production.
- Comfortable working across regions and functions in a global environment.
- Proactive and highly accountable, with the ability to identify missing requirements, anticipate challenges, and ensure commitments are completed.
- Effective at connecting teams, coordinating priorities, and driving resolution of outstanding issues without direct reporting authority.
Impact of the Role:
Within 12–18 months, success in this role will be measured by:
- First 6–12 months: successfully transition 5+ hardware products from pre-production into production release.
- Longer-term impact: Update and refine the NPI process to improve speed and efficiency for releasing new hardware products.
