On behalf of the MOD, we are looking for a Mechanical Engineer (Inside IR35) for a contract which runs to the end of March 2027 and is a hybrid role so requires 1 day a week in Bristol and occasional travel to both Falmouth in Cornwall and Birkenhead in Liverpool, additional travel will be expensed

This role sits within a dedicated Skill Group alongside other engineers working within the technical discipline of Mechanical Engineering.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will routinely apply your deep technical knowledge, understanding and experience of engineering fundamentals, such as structures, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, tribology, and materials, to supporting the delivery of complex military capability through acquisition activities. You will provide advice and guidance to others, including industry on Mechanical Engineering matters.

SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

As a Mechanical Engineer, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Requirements - Own the generation of technical requirements, defining technical deliverables/artifacts and updating other documentation for systems, including the considerations to in-service support and associated costs.
  • Technical Data - Authorise technical data input and changes to support the management and maturity of engineering documentation, focusing on successful technical outcomes.
  • Legislation/Policy - Working in a highly regulated area, educate others with relevant legislation, regulation, policy, processes, and standards to deliver technical documentation for a system. This includes the essential relation to quality, safety, security, and sustainability, of the system, and the interoperability with other sub-systems.
  • Risk - Identifies and analyses technical hazards /project impacts then contributes to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed.
  • Design - Manage the design of a system, component or process that meets the customer requirement within realistic constraints of time, cost, and performance.
  • Stakeholder Management - Collaborate and manage trade-offs with other sub-system teams and specialists, over technical requirements, and design compromises, to maximise successful system implementation and delivery.
  • V&V - Manage the system test, verification, validation, and evaluation process.
  • Support - Manage the support and modification to an operational system.
  • Assurance - Manage and participate in assurance, audit, and reviews activity.
  • Disposal - Manage the disposals and decommissioning of basic equipment.
  • Technical Discipline - Authorise recommendations in relation to your technical area of knowledge. Personal Development - Own your career progression and professionalisation. This includes engaging with your People Coach, maintaining membership and registration level, with a relevant Professional body, updating MyHR Career Development/Development Plan, conducting relevant learning and development in timely fashion, and keeping current with modern engineering technologies.

Essential Skills

  • Extensive experience across Mechanical engineering in either public and private sectors
  • Experience with managing both internal and external stakeholder relationships to deliver the portfolio of work
  • Excellent communication skills across all duties
  • Experience of working with both 3rd party suppliers and contractors onsite
  • Strong self starter and team player across the business

Desirable Skills

  • Maritime or Naval engineering experience and skillset will be highly beneficial
