Accounting Analyst Job Description
Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented, tech-forward Accounting Analyst to support Strata Cloud Accountants’ fractional CFO team and a portfolio of independent clients. This role is ideal for an experienced accountant or senior accounting/FP&A professional who can combine strong accounting judgment, QuickBooks Online fluency, advanced spreadsheet skills, and AI-enabled workflows to accelerate client-ready deliverables.
The Accounting Analyst will help prepare and maintain 13-week cash flow forecasts, budget and forecast updates, variance analysis, KPI dashboards, and financial summaries using data from client QBO accounting files and related reporting tools. This person must be able to determine whether accounting data is accurate, complete, and forecast-ready before relying on it for CFO-level analysis.
Success in this role requires critical thinking, strong organization, responsiveness, and the ability to support multiple clients, CFO leads, and managers at the same time. The ideal candidate is curious, tech-comfortable, and excited about building repeatable, high-quality AI-enabled workflows while maintaining strict accounting quality control.
Key Responsibilities
- FP&A and CFO Deliverable Support: Build, update, and maintain 13-week cash flow forecasts, budgets, forecast refreshes, budget-to-actual reports, KPI dashboards, and client-facing financial summaries.
- QBO Data Extraction and Review: Pull and review data from client QBO files, including chart of accounts, classes, locations, customer reporting, P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AR/AP aging, transaction detail, reconciliations, and other relevant reporting outputs.
- Data Cleanup and Mapping: Clean, structure, and map accounting data into usable management reporting formats; identify missing, duplicated, miscoded, or unusual transactions and communicate when data is not ready for forecasting or dashboard reporting.
- AI and Automation Leverage: Use AI and automation tools to improve formulas, draft financial commentary, identify anomalies, document processes, create repeatable templates, and speed up analysis while validating all outputs against source data and accounting logic.
- Dashboard and KPI Support: Create and refine KPI dashboards and management reporting in Excel, Google Sheets, Fathom, Spotlight, or similar tools, depending on client needs and firm standards.
- Critical Analysis and Problem Solving: Ask whether the numbers make sense, investigate variances, challenge assumptions, identify trends, and know when to escalate accounting, operational, or forecasting concerns to the CFO lead or manager.
- Client-Ready Communication: Translate financial information into clear, concise commentary and internal notes that CFO leads and managers can use in client meetings and deliverables.
- Multi-Client Execution: Manage recurring deadlines, competing priorities, shifting client needs, and requests from multiple CFO leads or managers without losing track of details or deliverable quality.
- Process Improvement: Develop repeatable templates, SOPs, checklists, prompts, and workflows that make recurring CFO deliverables faster, more consistent, and scalable across the client portfolio.
Required Skills and Traits:
- Strong accounting foundation, including accrual accounting, cash vs. accrual, AR/AP timing, deferred revenue, payroll, debt, inventory/COGS where applicable, balance sheet trends, and monthly close quality.
- Strong QBO fluency, including the ability to navigate client files, understand reporting limitations, and identify when underlying accounting data needs cleanup before analysis.
- Advanced Excel and/or Google Sheets skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data cleanup tools, dynamic models, and clean dashboard-ready outputs.
- Working knowledge of Key deliverables, including 13-week cash flows, budgets, forecasts, variance analysis, KPI tracking, and management reporting.
- Practical AI and automation aptitude, with the judgment to use AI as an assistant rather than the final reviewer.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; able to identify trends, challenge assumptions, investigate exceptions, and communicate risk areas clearly.
- Excellent organization and time management in a multi-client, multi-manager environment.
- Clear written communication skills and the ability to translate numbers into plain English.
- High ownership, curiosity, responsiveness, and willingness to build and improve repeatable processes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field preferred; equivalent accounting and FP&A experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in accounting, client accounting services, FP&A support, controllership support, or a similar role.
- Demonstrated experience working in QBO or QBOA required; experience with QBO Advanced, Spreadsheet Sync, Fathom, Spotlight, or similar reporting tools preferred.
- Experience building or maintaining cash flow forecasts, budgets, forecasts, KPI dashboards, variance analyses, or client-facing financial summaries.
- Comfort using AI tools safely and practically to accelerate work while validating results against source data and accounting judgment.
- Experience in an outsourced accounting, fractional CFO, or multi-client service environment strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive client financial information with professionalism and discretion.
This Accounting Analyst role is designed for an accounting professional who can help Strata’s CFO team scale high-quality financial planning and advisory deliverables through strong accounting judgment, data fluency, technology adoption, and practical AI-enabled workflows.
