Why this role exists

Two engineers are rolling off the core platform team at the same time as the roadmap roughly doubles. Rather than replace both with like for like, we are hiring one genuinely senior engineer who can hold the whole stack: the media pipeline, the cloud infrastructure it runs on, and the product surface customers see.

Concretely, the work waiting for you includes shipping live video and pause or resume to feature parity with the category leader, bringing Webex and Slack Huddles to production quality, getting per participant audio and video stable across every platform, cutting infrastructure cost per meeting hour, and hardening the whole thing to a standard we can put in front of an enterprise security review. You will not be handed a narrow lane.

What you will own

1. Real time media pipeline

  • Media path: ingest, mixing, transcoding and delivery for audio and video across all supported meeting platforms, including per participant streams.
  • Compression and quality: encoding ladders, codec selection, bitrate and resolution strategy, container and muxing work. FFmpeg is a daily tool here, not a line on a resume.
  • Streaming: real time audio streaming at PCM 48kHz over WebSockets, low latency fan out, backpressure, reconnection and ordering guarantees under packet loss.
  • Storage and egress: recording, transcript and artifact delivery to our storage and to customer owned S3 buckets, with integrity checks and retry semantics.
  • Cost per hour: cost and latency per meeting hour are engineering metrics you own, not finance metrics you are told about.

2. Meeting platform integrations

  • Four platforms and counting: deepen and stabilise Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Webex. Ship Slack Huddles and the desktop capture path.
  • SDK and auth surfaces: Zoom Meeting SDK including the On Behalf Of token flow, RTMS, Google and Microsoft OAuth, Graph API, calendar integrations and hosted OAuth so customers do not have to register their own apps.
  • Adversarial APIs: these vendors ship breaking changes with little notice. Owning an integration means owning detection, diagnosis and the fix, not filing a ticket upstream and waiting.
  • Lifecycle: bot join, leave, reconnect and failure handling, plus the participant event and user journey timeline customers build on.

3. Cloud infrastructure and scale

  • Multi cloud by necessity: we run across AWS (ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, EventBridge, SQS and SNS, CloudWatch, Route 53) and GCP (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Load Balancing, Cloud CDN). You will be comfortable in both and opinionated about what belongs where.
  • Kubernetes: container orchestration for bursty, stateful, media heavy workloads. Autoscaling a stateless API is easy. Autoscaling hundreds of concurrent bots each holding a live media session is the actual problem.
  • Infrastructure as code and CI or CD: Terraform, Docker, GitHub Actions, environment promotion and safe rollback. Infrastructure changes are reviewed code, not console clicks.
  • Scale: capacity planning, regional strategy, warm pools and the scheduling logic that decides where a bot runs.

4. Full stack product surface

  • Backend: Node.js and TypeScript services, Python where it fits, REST APIs, webhooks and internal service contracts, PostgreSQL schema and query design.
  • Frontend: React and TypeScript for the developer console, dashboards and admin tooling. You will not be asked to be a designer, but you should be able to ship a clean, working interface without waiting for someone else.
  • Developer experience: API keys, RBAC, rate limiting, usage metering and Stripe billing paths.
  • Documentation: accurate docs and reference examples are part of shipping a feature, not a follow up ticket.

5. Reliability, security and operations

  • Observability: logs, metrics, traces and alerts that let you answer "what happened to bot X at 14:32" in under two minutes.
  • On call and incidents: shared on call for a small team. You will be an incident commander sometimes, and you will write the post mortem.
  • Security and compliance: secure coding practice, least privilege IAM, encryption in transit and at rest, and the evidence trail our SOC 2 programme depends on.
  • Quality: you are expected to ship features with tests, review other people’s code properly, and push back when something is not ready.

Non negotiable requirements

These are hard filters. If you do not have these, this is not the right role.

  • 5 or more years building and operating production backend or infrastructure systems, including systems that carried real traffic and real consequences when they broke.
  • Deep, demonstrable Node.js and TypeScript. You should be able to reason about the event loop, memory pressure, streams and backpressure without looking it up.
  • Real experience with video or audio processing. FFmpeg at the level of building and debugging non trivial pipelines, understanding of codecs, containers, bitrates and transcoding tradeoffs.
  • WebSockets and real time or low latency systems in production. Long lived connections, reconnection strategy, ordering, backpressure and failure modes.
  • Strong AWS experience across compute, storage, queueing and observability, and enough GCP to be productive from week one. Multi cloud is our reality, not a preference.
  • Kubernetes and Docker in production, including networking, resource limits, autoscaling and debugging a pod that is misbehaving under load.
  • Full stack capability. You can build and ship a React and TypeScript interface on top of your own API without hand holding.
  • PostgreSQL schema design, indexing and query performance work.
  • Fluent daily use of modern AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or equivalents. We expect engineers here to be materially faster because of them, and to have a clear view on where they help and where they must not be trusted.
  • Genuine ownership. You find the problem, you scope it, you ship it, you operate it.

Strongly preferred

  • Hands on work with video and audio compression: H.264 or H.265, VP8 or VP9 or AV1, Opus or AAC, rate control, keyframe strategy, quality versus cost tuning at scale.
  • WebRTC internals: SFU or MCU architectures, ICE, STUN and TURN, jitter buffers, simulcast, RTP and RTCP.
  • Direct experience with any meeting platform SDK: Zoom Meeting SDK or RTMS, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Webex.
  • Speech to text pipelines, diarization, speaker mapping and streaming transcription systems.
  • Terraform and infrastructure as code at a level where you are comfortable owning the modules.
  • High throughput event driven and queue backed systems with idempotency, retries and dead letter handling.
  • Performance and cost optimisation work with a measurable before and after you can talk through.
  • Go, Rust or C++ for the performance sensitive parts of a media path.

Nice to have

  • Prior work at an infrastructure or developer tools company, especially anything API first and usage billed.
  • Open source contributions, particularly to media, streaming or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience building against or inside an LLM application stack: streaming inference, realtime voice agents, tool calling, evaluation.
  • SOC 2, ISO 27001 or similar compliance experience from the engineering side.
  • Early stage startup experience where you were one of the first engineers.

Who does well here

  • You have built something meaningful that other people depended on, and you can explain exactly how it failed the first time.
  • You are calm in production incidents and you go toward the fire rather than away from it.
  • You treat an undocumented third party API as a puzzle, not a blocker.
  • You care about correctness and cost, not only about shipping.
  • You can go deep on a hard media or infrastructure problem for a week, then come up and ship a dashboard feature the next day.
  • You write clearly. Design docs, post mortems and API docs are part of the craft.
  • You are comfortable being the most senior person in the room on a given problem, and equally comfortable saying you do not know yet.

This role is not for you if

  • You want a narrow, well defined lane with a product manager filtering the work for you.
  • You avoid production debugging, on call or operational ownership.
  • You have only ever integrated media SDKs at the surface and have never opened the pipeline underneath.
  • You need a large team around you to make progress.
  • You are looking for a slow, low intensity environment. We are a small team carrying an oversized roadmap, and the pace reflects that.
