Our development workload has grown, and we need a Senior Web Developer who can come in, understand what’s already there and make sensible decisions about what happens next. There are new builds on the roadmap, existing sites that need attention and plenty of technical problems that require more than a quick patch.
You’ll have room to get properly involved rather than simply working through a queue of tickets.
The Work
Projects vary in size and complexity, but you can expect to:
- Build and develop websites and web applications from the ground up
- Improve and maintain existing websites and codebases
- Develop responsive front-end interfaces
- Build and integrate APIs and back-end functionality
- Work with databases and third-party systems
- Investigate performance issues, bugs and technical problems
- Improve page speed, stability and overall site performance
- Review code before deployment
- Handle testing across browsers and devices
- Support releases and production deployments
- Help establish better development standards across the team
You’ll also be the person we can bring into a conversation when a project needs a technical answer, not another meeting.
Your Background
This is a genuine senior position, so we’re looking for solid commercial development experience rather than someone taking their first step up.
You’ll need a strong working knowledge of:
HTML / CSS / JavaScript
React, Vue or another modern JavaScript framework
REST APIs and server-side development
Git and version control
SQL or other database technologies
Responsive development
Testing, debugging and performance optimisation
Experience with technologies such as Node.js, PHP, WordPress, AWS, cloud infrastructure or CI/CD is useful, although we’re not expecting one person to have worked with everything.
Where the Senior Part Comes In
There will be times when the brief isn’t perfect.
You’ll need to ask the right questions, challenge an approach when there’s a better option and be comfortable making technical decisions without waiting for somebody else to make them first.
You may also review other developers’ work, help troubleshoot difficult issues and give less experienced team members a hand when they get stuck.
No unnecessary hierarchy. No pretending every problem needs a complete rebuild. Just good development decisions and work that holds up once it goes live.
