DFM Project Engineer
Location: Hybrid/Remote (based on company policy) in Guaynabo or Mayaguez, Puerto Rico Job Type: Full-Time
About the Role
We are seeking a DFM Engineer to support the technical and commercial review of custom manufacturing opportunities. This position serves as a critical link between customers, Sales, suppliers/manufacturing partners, and internal operations. The DFM Engineer reviews customer engineering drawings, technical specifications, purchase orders, and contractual requirements to determine whether an order can be manufactured successfully and whether the commercial and technical requirements are aligned before the order moves into production.
The ideal candidate combines a strong understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering drawings with the ability to review Purchase Orders (POs), contracts, Terms & Conditions (T&Cs), and customer requirements.
This is not solely a design role. It requires technical judgment, commercial awareness, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate directly with internal teams, customers, and manufacturing partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer engineering drawings, CAD files, blueprints, specifications, and technical requirements to assess manufacturability.
- Perform Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews and identify potential manufacturing risks before production.
- Evaluate dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, materials, finishes, geometry, and other manufacturing requirements.
- Determine whether proposed designs are compatible with available manufacturing processes and capabilities.
- Identify technical discrepancies, unrealistic tolerances, difficult-to-manufacture features, material/process conflicts, or other potential production issues.
- Recommend practical manufacturing alternatives or clarifications when requirements cannot be met as submitted.
- Review customer Purchase Orders, contracts, Terms & Conditions, and order requirements before orders are accepted/released.
- Compare POs and contractual requirements against quotes, drawings, specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and agreed commercial terms.
- Identify discrepancies involving scope, specifications, quantities, pricing, delivery expectations, quality requirements, documentation, or other order conditions.
- Work with Sales and customers to resolve technical or contractual questions necessary to move opportunities toward successful order completion.
- Communicate technical requirements and manufacturing limitations clearly to customers and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Coordinate with manufacturing partners and suppliers to confirm capabilities and resolve technical questions.
- Support contract/order review and ensure requirements are understood before manufacturing begins.
- Maintain accurate documentation of technical reviews, decisions, requirements, and customer/manufacturing communications.
- Manage multiple active reviews and priorities in a fast-paced, computer-based environment.
Required Qualifications
- Professional experience in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, quality engineering, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD drawings, and technical specifications.
- Working knowledge of dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, materials, finishes, and manufacturing requirements.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, milling, turning, sheet-metal fabrication, injection molding, additive manufacturing, casting, or comparable processes.
- Ability to evaluate designs or technical requirements for manufacturing feasibility.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies across multiple technical and commercial documents.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Comfortable communicating with customers, suppliers/manufacturing partners, Sales, Engineering, and Operations.
- Strong computer skills and ability to learn new technical and business systems quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
- Previous Design for Manufacturability (DFM) experience.
- Experience with CNC machining and/or sheet-metal fabrication.
- Experience reviewing Purchase Orders, contracts, customer Terms & Conditions, or commercial requirements in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting Sales, quoting, contract review, order review, or customer-facing engineering activities.
- Experience working directly with manufacturing suppliers or external manufacturing partners.
- CAD experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Creo, CATIA, or similar software.
- Experience with dimensional inspection, metrology, quality inspection, or First Article Inspection (FAI).
- Familiarity with common metals and engineering materials, manufacturing finishes, and secondary processes.
- Experience working in aerospace, automotive, medical device, precision machining, industrial equipment, fabrication, or other technical manufacturing environments.
What Success Looks Like
A successful DFM Engineer can answer two questions before an order moves forward:
1. Can we manufacture this?
You can interpret the customer's design and determine whether its geometry, tolerances, materials, finishes, and other requirements are compatible with the proposed manufacturing process.
2. Can we accept this order as written?
You can review the PO, contractual requirements, T&Cs, technical documentation, and agreed commercial requirements to identify discrepancies or risks that need to be resolved before the order is finalized.
You will be expected to communicate those findings clearly and work with customers, Sales, and manufacturing partners to resolve issues and help move viable opportunities successfully into production.
We are looking for profiles that have worked as a DFM Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Applications Engineer, Process Engineer, Supplier Quality Engineer, Quality Engineer, Manufacturing/Project Engineer, or Technical Sales/Application Engineer and have experience bridging customer requirements with real-world manufacturing capabilities.
You should enjoy the combination of engineering analysis, problem-solving, customer interaction, and commercial/order review rather than seeking a position focused exclusively on CAD design.
