Job Summary
The Mold Costing & Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimations for plastic injection molds, tooling modifications, and component manufacturing. This role requires analyzing 3D CAD models, part drawings, tool specifications, and manufacturing processes to deliver competitive and profitable tooling quotes for customer RFQs (Request for Quotation).
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation & RFQ Analysis: Analyze 3D CAD models (STEP/IGES) and 2D engineering drawings to calculate precise costs for multi-cavity injection molds, hot runner systems, and mold inserts.
- Tooling Feasibility & DFM: Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews, evaluate parting lines, draft angles, wall thickness, undercut mechanisms (lifters/sliders), and cooling layouts to assess tool complexity and cost impact.
- BOM & Process Calculation: Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) for tooling steel (P20, H13, NAK80, etc.), standard components (Hasco, DME, Meusburger), machining time (CNC, EDM, Wire EDM), and benching/assembly hours.
- Supplier & Subcontractor Coordination: Source and compare supplier quotations for mold bases, hot runner systems, heat treatment, surface graining/texture, and special coatings.
- Value Engineering & Cost Reduction: Identify cost-saving opportunities through mold design optimization, cycle time reduction estimates, and standardizing tool components.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Tool Room, Process Engineering, Procurement, and Sales teams to validate feasibility and refine quote margins.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool Design, or Tool & Die Making (NTTF / CIPET preferred).
- Experience: 3–7 years of experience in mold design, tool room operations, or tooling cost estimation within the plastic injection molding industry.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, NX) and cost estimation tools/Excel modeling.
Key Competencies
- Strong knowledge of plastic materials, shrinkage rates, and mold manufacturing processes (CNC milling, spark erosion, grinding).
- Deep understanding of injection mold structures (2-plate, 3-plate, hot runner systems, unscrewing molds).
- Analytical mindset with high accuracy in numerical calculation and commercial awareness.
