ABOUT THE COMPANY

Williams Strike First Corporation (WSF) is a Canadian fire safety manufacturer built from two respected names — Williams Brothers Corporation and Strike First Corporation — with a history approaching 120 years. Headquartered in Scarborough, Ontario, we design and manufacture fire extinguishers, cabinets, and related fire safety equipment that people rely on when it matters most. We're a business in active transformation, investing in lean manufacturing and stronger engineering and operational foundations as we scale for the next chapter.

Position Summary

The Manufacturing Engineer builds the technical foundation our operations run on: consistent item coding, accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and routings, standardized procedures, and reliable manufacturing standards. The role works across Williams Brothers and Strike First alongside Production, Quality, Purchasing, Inventory Management and Product Development.

The first phase is foundational: building the item coding structure, validating BOMs and routings, and standing up the SOP and document control framework. These are projects with a defined end. Once in place, they move to a sustain mode (change control, periodic reviews), and the role’s focus shifts to industrial engineering and continuous improvement: standard times, capacity, layout and flow, and building an improvement culture on the floor.

This is a hands-on, plant-floor role. Much of the work, from capturing how processes actually run to conducting time studies and validating BOMs and routings, happens on the shop floor with the people doing the work.

Key Responsibilities

1. Item Coding, BOMs & Routings

  • Develop and implement a standardized item coding and classification system for raw materials, components, subassemblies and finished products.
  • Develop and validate BOMs, routings and work centers so they reflect how products are actually built.
  • Define engineering data standards, including material descriptions, specifications, units of measure and manufacturing requirements.
  • Establish a review and approval process for changes to BOMs, routings and specifications.
  • Provide technical support to Purchasing and Inventory Management on material specifications, item identification and substitutions, and help resolve discrepancies in item codes, BOMs and descriptions.

Accountability: The Manufacturing Engineer owns the engineering content: the item coding structure, BOMs, routings and specifications as well as maintenance of ERP master data.

2. Process Standardization & Documentation

  • Build and maintain the framework for SOPs and work instructions, including templates, structure, terminology, level of detail and the review and approval workflow.
  • Set up document numbering, version control, approval, revision and record-keeping practices.
  • Agree priorities with department managers based on operational impact, and maintain a standardization plan.
  • Work with managers, supervisors and process owners to capture operational knowledge and turn it into clear, practical procedures.
  • Track and report progress, completeness, quality and implementation status.
  • Run periodic reviews with process owners to keep procedures accurate and current.
  • Support managers in implementing procedures, identifying deviations and closing gaps.
  • Make sure procedures are usable as the basis for training, knowledge transfer and process control.

Accountability: The Manufacturing Engineer owns the standardization and documentation framework, facilitates its training, implementation, and monitors consistency, adherence and progress. Department managers and designated process owners remain responsible for the technical accuracy, operational approval, execution and ongoing compliance of their procedures.

3. Industrial Engineering & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct time studies, work measurement and process analysis based on defined and approved operating methods.
  • Develop and maintain standard cycle times, setup times and labour requirements.
  • Provide manufacturing standards to support production planning, capacity evaluation, costing and performance measurement.
  • Analyze methods, material flow, equipment utilization and workstation layouts to find opportunities for improvement.
  • Support a continuous improvement culture by involving employees in problem solving, encouraging improvement ideas from the floor, and coaching teams on lean and problem-solving tools.
  • Work with managers and supervisors to develop practical, sustainable improvements to methods, tooling, equipment and workflow.
  • Set measurable performance standards and check that implemented improvements hold.
  • Update standards when processes, equipment, materials or methods change.

4. New Product Development Support – Williams Brothers

  • Review engineering drawings and specifications for manufacturability and production requirements.
  • Develop and validate BOMs, routings and material specifications for new and modified Williams Brothers products.
  • Support prototype evaluation, pilot runs and the transition into routine production.
  • Work with Production and Quality to resolve manufacturing issues before release.

5. Health & Safety

  • Work in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and company health and safety policies.
  • Build ergonomics and safe work practices into procedures, methods and workstation layouts.
  • Report hazards and support incident investigations where processes or methods are a factor.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or diploma in Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum five years of experience in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering or process improvement.
  • Proven experience developing item coding structures, BOMs and routings.
  • Experience building SOP and work instruction frameworks, including document control.
  • Strong grounding in time study, work measurement, process analysis and continuous improvement methods.
  • Working knowledge of ERP manufacturing modules (item master, BOMs, routings).
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Comfortable spending a significant part of the day on the plant floor.
  • Strong faci litation and coordination skills, and the ability to turn operational knowledge into clear, practical documentation.

Assets

  • Experience in metal fabrication or assembly operations.
  • CAD drafting experience.
