- Technical leadership role across enterprise platforms in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
- Design, build and evolve scalable solutions across a modern enterprise tech stack
- Mentor and guide a small team of developers
- Onsite position based at Callaghan, NSW
Be part of the University of Newcastle’s ongoing digital transformation and take a leadership role across our enterprise technology platforms.
The Role
Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) is the engine behind the University's technology strategy, delivering cutting-edge digital services to staff and students and enabling excellence in education, research and engagement. As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you'll sit at the heart of that mission.
This isn't a single-platform job. You'll work across an enterprise-grade modern tech stack that includes ServiceNow, Dynamics 365, Okta, SailPoint, GitHub, AWS Cloud, Microsoft Fabric, MuleSoft, Atlassian (Jira/Confluence) and more. You'll provide technical leadership in a cross-functional team to diagnose and resolve complex technical challenges, drive platform reliability and performance, and champion continuous improvement across the team.
You'll also be a people leader, mentoring and guiding a small team of developers, building their capability, and fostering a culture of innovation, accountability and collaboration. If you thrive on solving hard problems, lifting others and shaping the way technology is delivered at scale, this is your opportunity.
What you'll do:
- Develop and provision software and infrastructure across enterprise platforms, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable and secure
- Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of AI-assisted development, CI/CD pipelines, automation, observability and infrastructure-as-code practices
- Investigate, plan and design systems requirements to meet stakeholder needs, then coordinate implementation end-to-end
- Provide expert advice, guidance and training to DTS and broader University stakeholders on technology platforms and systems
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex scalability and performance issues across multi-system environments with upstream/downstream dependencies
- Oversee code and build quality, review deployments, and enforce development standards
- Ensure platform health through regular maintenance, upgrades, secure coding practices and alignment with University security policies
- Mentor and lead a small team of developers, supporting their growth through development plans, performance discussions and hands-on coaching
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, managed-service partners and vendors
What we're looking for:
- At least 5 years experience developing on enterprise platforms with complex upstream and downstream dependencies, for example across areas such as enterprise application platforms, cloud environments, or systems integration
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capability, including experience coordinating multiple stakeholders and managing a team of developers
- Significant hands-on experience applying DevOps practices, including automation, observability, alerting, infrastructure-as-code, configuration management and deployment tooling
- Strong ability to identify, troubleshoot and resolve complex scalability and performance issues, with solid ITSM experience (incident, problem, change, release and service-level management)
- Demonstrated experience implementing information security, risk management and compliance controls within enterprise technology environments
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and build relationships across IT teams, organisation-wide stakeholders and vendors
- Demonstrated knowledge of workplace obligations and experience cultivating a safe, healthy, equitable, diverse and respectful workplace
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with ServiceNow or Dynamics 365 is valued but not essential
- Detailed working knowledge across a very broad range of enterprise IT ecosystems
This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW Level 8, located in the Digital Technology Solutions department at the Callaghan Campus.
