Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced Embedded / IoT Security Engineer to join our hardware security lab. The successful candidate will lead hands-on security assessments of IoT and embedded devices across the hardware, firmware, and network layers, produce detailed technical reports with actionable mitigations, and help mature the lab's testing capability and standards. This is a deeply technical, research-driven role suited to someone who enjoys taking devices apart, finding weaknesses others miss, and communicating them clearly to clients.
Key Responsibilities:
· Hands-on proof: firmware extraction, JTAG/UART/SWD/SPI/I2C exploitation, reverse engineering, hardware fault injection, and report samples.
· Lab-quality credential: ISO/IEC 17025 internal auditor or documented lab-quality experience.
· Domain credential: automotive, medical-device, or IoT security certification depending on the product mix.
· Community evidence: CTF rankings, conference talks, published research, CVEs, open-source tools, or training delivery.
· Proven hands-on experience with firmware extraction, debug-interface exploitation (JTAG / UART / SWD / SPI / I2C), and bootloader analysis.
· Solid understanding of embedded architectures (microcontrollers / SoCs), common communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN), and firmware / binary analysis.
· Strong ability to write clear, well-structured technical assessment reports with reproducible steps and mitigations.
· Perform invasive and non-invasive hardware penetration testing on IoT / embedded products, and authoring comprehensive reports with prioritised mitigations.
· Identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities across hardware, software, and network layers using both black-box and white-box methodologies.
· Extract firmware from flash chips of varied packages (e.g., 8-pin SOIC, serial flash, BGA / eMMC) and analyse it for secrets, credentials, and exploitable flaws.
· Access debug and boot interfaces such as JTAG, UART, SWD, SPI, and I2C, and exploit bootloaders (e.g., U-Boot, CEF) to obtain low-level device access.
· Apply hardware fault-injection / voltage-glitching techniques on microcontroller-based systems (e.g., STM32) to bypass authentication and security controls.
· Conduct assessments across a broad product range — medical devices, networking / edge devices, automotive and EV systems, cameras / DVR-NVR, smart batteries, and similar.
· Support clients toward compliance objectives (e.g., FDA for medical devices, ISO/IEC 17025 lab practices, and applicable IoT security standards).
· Contribute to the setup, provisioning, and standards development of the security testing lab, including tooling, test procedures, and quality processes.
· Guide and mentor junior engineers, review their work, and act as a reporting / technical lead for engagements where required.
· Conduct original research, and where appropriate deliver workshops, training, or publications on IoT / hardware security topics.
Either of these certifications
· CPSA, OSCP, CEH, GIAC, GWEB/GPEN.
