We are looking for an AWS DevOps Engineer to run and scale the infrastructure behind our EdTech platform for JEE, NEET, and board-exam aspirants. Our stack is a set of NestJS microservices on multi-AZ EKS, backed by Aurora MySQL with RDS Proxy, MongoDB, Redis, and OpenSearch, serving a Next.js website, a Laravel admin panel, and native Android and iOS apps.
The interesting part of this job is the load pattern. Traffic is not flat — it spikes hard and predictably around live classes, test launches, and exam season, with tens of thousands of concurrent students hitting the platform in the same ten-minute window. You will own the systems that have to stay up in exactly those windows, where a five-minute outage during a live test is a real cost to real students.
This is a hands-on ownership role, not a ticket-closing role. You will build, automate, monitor, and be on the hook when something breaks.
What You'll Do
- Own and operate our AWS production environment — EKS, EC2, ALB/NLB, VPC and networking, S3, CloudFront, Route 53, IAM, and the managed data services behind them.
- Run our Kubernetes workloads on EKS — deployments, autoscaling (HPA, Cluster Autoscaler/Karpenter), resource limits, node groups, ingress, and rollout strategies that do not drop traffic.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins and Git — automated builds, tests, image builds, and safe deploys across dev, staging, and production for backend services, web, and mobile release artifacts.
- Manage infrastructure as code with Terraform — modules, state management, environment parity, and reviewed changes rather than console clicks.
- Own monitoring, alerting, and observability end-to-end — metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts that fire on user impact rather than on noise.
- Plan and execute capacity for peak events — load-test ahead of major test launches and exam season, pre-scale where needed, and know the breaking point of each tier before students find it.
- Run incident response — lead or support on-call, drive resolution during production incidents, and write blameless postmortems with follow-up actions that actually get closed.
- Tune and troubleshoot performance across the stack: connection-pool exhaustion, database read spikes during live classes, cache invalidation behaviour, slow endpoints, and container resource pressure.
- Harden the platform — WAF and DDoS protection, security groups and least-privilege IAM, secrets management, patching, image scanning, and audit-ready access controls.
- Own backup, restore, and disaster recovery — tested restores, defined RTO/RPO, and multi-AZ failover you have actually rehearsed.
- Drive cloud cost optimization — rightsizing, Savings Plans and Reserved Instances, storage lifecycle policies, egress and CDN costs, and reporting on spend per service.
- Work closely with backend, mobile, and QA teams on deployability — sane environments, fast feedback loops, and self-serve tooling so engineers are not blocked on you.
- Document runbooks, architecture, and operational procedures so that critical knowledge is not sitting in one person's head.
Must-Have Skills
- 3–5 years in DevOps, SRE, or cloud infrastructure on a consumer-facing, high-traffic product — EdTech, e-commerce, fintech, media, or similar.
- Strong hands-on AWS experience in production: EC2, VPC and networking, ALB/NLB, S3, CloudFront, Route 53, IAM, CloudWatch, and at least one managed database service.
- Production experience with Kubernetes, preferably EKS — you have deployed, scaled, debugged, and upgraded clusters, not just applied manifests someone else wrote.
- Solid Docker fundamentals — image builds, multi-stage builds, registries, and container-level debugging.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins (or GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar) and strong Git workflow discipline — branching, tagging, releases, rollbacks.
- Infrastructure as code experience — Terraform preferred; CloudFormation, Pulumi, or CDK acceptable if the Terraform ramp-up is realistic.
- Working knowledge of monitoring and alerting stacks — Prometheus/Grafana, CloudWatch, Datadog, New Relic, Nagios, Zabbix, or the ELK/OpenSearch stack. You should be strong in at least one and able to reason about what to alert on.
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting — processes, networking, file systems, systemd, and reading logs under pressure.
- Scripting ability in Bash and Python (or Go) — enough to automate operational work rather than repeat it.
- Experience operating a system with real traffic spikes, and the judgement that comes from having been on-call for one.
- Comfort with production incident handling — you can stay calm, communicate status clearly, and prioritise restoring service over finding blame.
- Clear written communication — runbooks, postmortems, and change notes that someone else can follow at 2 a.m.
Good to Have
- Prior EdTech experience, or any product with sharp, scheduled traffic peaks — ticketing, exams, flash sales, results, or live events.
- Experience with live streaming infrastructure — AWS IVS, MediaLive, MediaConvert, MediaPackage, or comparable video pipelines and their CDN and cost behaviour.
- Experience with Aurora MySQL and RDS Proxy, MongoDB Atlas, Redis/ElastiCache, and OpenSearch in production — connection ceilings, read replicas, failover, and cost tuning.
- Experience running Node.js/NestJS, PHP/Laravel, or Next.js workloads in containers.
- Service mesh, API gateway, or advanced ingress experience — Istio, Linkerd, Kong, or NGINX Ingress at scale.
- GitOps tooling — ArgoCD or Flux — and progressive delivery patterns like canary and blue-green.
- Message brokers and event pipelines — SQS, SNS, Kafka, MQTT/EMQX, or EventBridge.
- Secrets and config management — AWS Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, HashiCorp Vault.
- FinOps experience — building cost visibility, chargeback by service, and driving down spend without degrading reliability.
- Security exposure — WAF rule tuning, VAPT remediation, CIS benchmarks, SOC 2 or ISO 27001 readiness.
- Multi-account AWS setups — Organizations, Control Tower, SSO, and cross-account access patterns.
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional) or CKA/CKAD — useful signal, not a substitute for hands-on depth.
What We're Looking For
- Automation-first — if you have done it manually twice, you are already scripting it.
- Calm under production pressure, and honest about what you do not yet know.
- Ownership mindset — you treat uptime as yours, not as the backend team's problem.
- Cost-aware — you can hold reliability and the AWS bill in your head at the same time.
- Security-conscious by default, not as an afterthought before an audit.
- Collaborative — you make other engineers faster instead of becoming a bottleneck.
- High-agency — you spot the fragile thing before it breaks and fix it without being asked.
