Job Purpose:
You will drive the design, development, and validation of mechanical parts, enclosures, sub-assemblies, and assemblies as part of the New Product Development (NPD) team. You will work closely with industrial design (ID), vendors, test engineering, and manufacturing to deliver robust, manufacturable products that meet mechanical, thermal, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design enclosures and mechanical systems using aluminum, plastics, and sheet metal, ensuring compliance with mechanical, thermal, manufacturability (DFM), and assembly (DFA) requirements.
- Develop prototypes (parts and subassemblies) by liaising with vendors, overseeing fabrication, and ensuring they meet design intent.
- Test and analyze prototypes; document results; iterate/refine designs based on feedback from testing and validation.
- Collaborate with the ID (Industrial Design) team in concept generation and feasibility evaluation.
- Prepare final design specifications, including 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings.
- Release CAD data (3D models and 2D drawings) for tooling and production.
- Execute Design Verification Tests (DVT) on fully tooled products to ensure they meet performance and reliability targets.
- Design and develop packaging components (foams, cartons), including creation of die-cut drawings and artwork for labels, screen/pad printing.
- Plan and support tooling development phases, including overseeing tooling vendors, monitoring progress, and validating tooling outputs.
- Work with the NPD team to transition products into manufacturing, ensure quality goals are met, and support issue resolution post-launch.
- Assist in preparation and maintenance of Bills of Materials (BOMs); define part specifications in the engineering/PLM database.
- Create detailed assembly drawings, sequences, and instructions.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure dimensional integrity across assemblies.
- Support the qualification of new parts and subassemblies (material, process, performance).
- Assist in vendor selection and qualification for new components or subassemblies.
- Provide technical support to vendors & manufacturing partners for improvement, troubleshooting, and optimization.
Skills & Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience (or relevant) in mechanical design, ideally in product development or consumer/industrial electronics.
- Experience working in NPD environments, cross-functional teams, and transitioning designs to manufacturing.
- Expert in 3D CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA) and 2D drafting.
- Experience with sheet metal design, plastics, aluminum extrusions, and assemblies.
- Understanding of DFA (Design for Assembly) / DFM (Design for Manufacturability) principles.
- Experience in prototyping, testing, and validation methodologies.
- Ability to do tolerance stack analyses and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with tooling design and vendor processes (molds, dies, jigs & fixtures).
- Experience with packaging design (foam, cartons, dielines, artwork) is a plus.
- Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, machining).
- Proficiency with engineering software (FEA, thermal analysis, simulation tools) is an advantage.
- Familiarity with PLM / PDM systems and BOM management.
