Junior Project Manager – Scaffolding
Safe Access Solutions (Scaffolding) Ltd t/a SAS Scaffolding
Location: Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas Salary: £27,000–£32,000 per year, depending on experience Job type: Full-time, permanent
Big ambition? Let's give it somewhere to go.
At SAS Scaffolding, we're looking for someone with a bit of fire in their belly. Someone who wants to understand how a business works, take responsibility, make things happen and build a career they can be proud of.
We're a growing, forward-looking scaffolding business, and this is an opportunity to join us at a stage where the right person can genuinely influence how their role develops and contribute to the future of the company.
This isn't a conventional Junior Project Manager position with a fixed set of responsibilities and a ceiling on progression. You'll work directly alongside the Director, learning the commercial and operational side of the business, taking on real responsibility and developing into a role that grows with your ability and the company.
We're looking for potential, personality and ambition. We can teach you about our business, but we want someone who brings the drive and tenacity to make the most of the opportunity.
The role
Initially, you'll work closely with the Director across surveying, estimating, client liaison and project coordination, gradually taking ownership of smaller, straightforward scaffolding projects.
You'll learn how projects are priced, planned and delivered, how client relationships are developed, what makes a job profitable and what it takes to get good people working well together.
As your knowledge and confidence develop, you'll be expected to take increasing responsibility for projects, manage your own workload and make a meaningful contribution to the way SAS operates.
What you'll be doing
Site surveying and estimating
- Attend construction sites to assess scaffolding requirements and gather accurate survey information.
- Learn to identify access requirements, site constraints, sequencing considerations and potential complications.
- Assist with preparing quotations and develop an understanding of labour, materials, hire periods, variations and job profitability.
- Progress towards surveying routine works and preparing straightforward quotations independently.
Client relationships
- Build strong working relationships with clients, site managers, quantity surveyors and other construction professionals.
- Arrange surveys, respond to enquiries, follow up quotations and communicate project requirements.
- Develop the confidence to address problems, manage expectations and ensure commitments are followed through.
Project management and coordination
- Help coordinate labour, materials, vehicles and schedules to ensure projects run efficiently.
- Take responsibility for smaller projects, from initial enquiry and survey through to erection, adaptations, hire and dismantling.
- Monitor progress, identify potential issues and take ownership of finding practical solutions.
- Track additional works, variations and hire extensions, ensuring these are properly recorded and authorised.
- Help ensure completed works are accurately documented and ready for invoicing.
Commercial and operational development
- Develop an understanding of project costs, pricing, margins and commercial decision-making.
- Learn the company's systems and processes, contributing ideas to improve efficiency and organisation.
- Take increasing responsibility for delivering work safely, efficiently and profitably.
- Undertake relevant training as appropriate, potentially including a scaffolding inspection course, with inspections carried out once suitably trained and competent.
Who we're looking for
Personality, attitude and potential are just as important to us as previous experience.
We're looking for someone who is:
- Ambitious and driven: You want to progress, take on responsibility and build a career rather than simply turn up and do a job.
- Confident and personable: You're comfortable talking to people, building relationships and holding your own in a professional environment.
- Good with people: You can build trust with clients, work effectively with experienced scaffolders and earn respect through your attitude, communication and reliability.
- Proactive and assertive: You spot what needs doing, ask sensible questions, follow things through and aren't afraid to address problems.
- Commercially minded: You're interested in how businesses operate, how work is priced and what makes a project successful and profitable.
- Organised and thorough: You pay attention to detail, manage your commitments and take pride in getting things right.
- Keen to learn: You can take feedback, apply what you've learned and continually improve.
- Accountable: You take ownership of your work, stand by your commitments and understand that your contribution matters.
We're particularly interested in someone who can combine confidence with humility: someone prepared to learn from experienced people, but who also has the personality and initiative to become a trusted member of the management team.
Experience and qualifications
A degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying or a related construction discipline would be advantageous, particularly if you've completed a relevant placement or gained some practical site experience.
However, a degree isn't essential. We're open to candidates from different backgrounds who can demonstrate the right attitude, aptitude and potential.
You might be:
- A recent graduate looking for an opportunity to put your education into practice and progress quickly.
- A junior project manager or construction professional who wants greater responsibility and a clearer route forward.
- Someone working in a related trade or industry who has the ability and ambition to move into project management.
Previous scaffolding experience would be useful, but it isn't essential. You'll have the opportunity to learn the practical and commercial aspects of the industry directly from the Director and the wider team.
A full UK driving licence is strongly preferred, as regular travel to construction sites will be required.
What you'll get in return
A genuine opportunity to progress.
We're a growing business, and we want to recruit someone who can grow with us. As the company develops, further opportunities for responsibility and progression will continue to emerge.
- Direct access to the Director: Learn how the business operates, how commercial decisions are made and how projects are managed.
- Real responsibility: Take ownership of work early on, with support and guidance as you develop.
- Career progression: Build towards independently managing projects and taking on broader operational and commercial responsibilities.
- Salary progression: Your salary will be reviewed as you develop, with progression reflecting your competence, contribution and increasing responsibility.
- Training and development: Opportunities to develop your technical, commercial and project management skills.
- The chance to make a difference: Bring your ideas, improve how we operate and help shape the future of the business.
We're looking for someone who wants to become a key part of SAS Scaffolding, not someone who intends to stand still. For the right individual, there is an opportunity to develop a rewarding long-term career as the business continues to grow.
