A Safety Incharge is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of employees, contractors, and visitors working in and around the company's facilities, specifically in areas involving high-temperature processes and potentially hazardous materials. The role involves the development, implementation, and management of safety programs and procedures that minimize workplace accidents and health risks.
Key Responsibilities:
1) Safety Program Development & Implementation:
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, and safety management systems in compliance with local, national, and international safety standards (such as OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols during all phases of the refractory manufacturing process, from raw material handling to the final product shipping.
2) Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification:
- Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and hazard analyses to identify potential safety risks in the refractory production area (e.g., handling of refractory materials, high-temperature operations, heavy machinery).
- Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks and prevent accidents.
3) Training & Awareness:
- Conduct safety training and awareness programs for all employees, including new hires and contractors, focusing on emergency procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, safe operation of equipment, and handling hazardous materials.
- Regularly update training content to reflect changes in safety standards, equipment, and processes.
4) Safety Inspections & Monitoring:
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly safety inspections of the plant and work areas, checking for compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Monitor the use and condition of safety equipment and PPE, ensuring that it is properly maintained and replaced as needed.
5) Accident Investigation & Reporting:
- Lead investigations into workplace accidents or near misses, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure timely reporting of accidents and incidents to relevant authorities and maintain accurate records in compliance with regulatory requirements.
6) Emergency Response Planning:
- Develop and maintain emergency response procedures, including fire drills, first-aid protocols, and evacuation plans, particularly considering the high-risk nature of refractory manufacturing (e.g., high temperatures, chemical exposure).
- Ensure that all employees are familiar with emergency procedures and that emergency response teams are well-trained.
7) Compliance with Safety Regulations:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to health and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, fire safety regulations, environmental guidelines).
- Stay updated on changes to safety regulations and industry best practices, and implement necessary adjustments within the company.
8) Safety Equipment and PPE Management:
- Oversee the procurement, distribution, and maintenance of safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, safety showers, helmets, gloves, and protective clothing.
- Monitor the correct use of PPE by workers and ensure that it meets industry standards.
9) Communication and Reporting:
- Maintain clear communication with all levels of staff regarding safety policies, procedures, and updates.
- Prepare regular safety performance reports for senior management, highlighting key safety metrics, ongoing concerns, and action plans.
10) Collaboration with Other Departments:
- Work closely with the operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure that safety protocols are integrated into daily operations.
- Participate in process improvements and equipment upgrades to ensure that safety considerations are prioritized.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
- Professional certifications like NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health), or OSHA certifications are often preferred.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a safety management role, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment (experience in the refractory, cement, steel, or heavy manufacturing industry is an advantage).
- Knowledge of safety regulations, risk assessment techniques, and accident investigation processes.
- Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with safety management software and tools for incident tracking and reporting.
- Ability to use safety equipment, conduct inspections, and handle emergency situations effectively.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong communication skills for training, reporting, and coordination across departments.
