Job Summary:

The Senior Safety Officer in a refractory company is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs specific to the handling, processing, and storage of refractory materials. This role involves overseeing safety compliance, conducting risk assessments, and promoting safety awareness to prevent accidents and ensure regulatory adherence.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Safety Program Development:
  • Design and implement safety programs tailored to the refractory industry, addressing specific risks associated with high-temperature processes, dust exposure, and chemical handling.
  • Develop and enforce safety policies and procedures that comply with industry standards and regulations.
  1. Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments for various processes, including kiln operations, material handling, and equipment use.
  • Identify potential hazards related to refractory materials and recommend corrective actions to mitigate risks.
  1. Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, industry standards, and environmental laws relevant to the refractory industry.
  • Stay updated on changes in regulations and incorporate necessary updates into safety protocols.
  1. Incident Investigation:
  • Lead investigations into workplace accidents and near-misses, particularly those involving high-temperature equipment, dust, and chemical exposure.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve safety measures.
  1. Training and Education:
  • Conduct safety training and awareness programs specific to the refractory industry, covering topics such as high-temperature safety, PPE use, and safe handling of refractory materials.
  • Provide ongoing education and support to employees on safety practices and emergency procedures.
  1. Emergency Response Planning:
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans specific to refractory processes and materials.
  • Coordinate and conduct emergency drills to ensure preparedness for incidents such as fires, chemical spills, or equipment failures.
  1. Safety Culture Enhancement:
  • Promote a safety-first culture within the organization by engaging with employees, addressing safety concerns, and encouraging adherence to safety protocols.
  • Foster an environment where safety is integrated into daily operations and decision-making.
  1. Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Track and analyze safety performance metrics, including incident rates, near-misses, and compliance audits.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for management on safety performance and program effectiveness.
  1. Collaboration:
  • Work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure safety considerations are integrated into process improvements and new projects.
  • Serve as a liaison between the company and regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a safety role within a manufacturing or industrial environment, with specific experience in the refractory industry or similar high-risk sectors preferred.
  • Skills: In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and best practices relevant to high-temperature and industrial environments, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in an industrial environment with exposure to high temperatures, dust, and chemicals.
  • May require occasional travel to various plant locations or sites.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to conduct safety inspections, which may involve walking, climbing, and lifting.
